Is Buccastem M like migraleve?

I have a migraine and feeling so sick. I used to use migraleve but they didn’t have any last time I went to chemist and they gave me Buccastem M instead. Are they the same thing?

no, its not the same ingredients.
Buccastem (prochlorperazine) is an anti-nausea tablet that can be used to help treat the symptoms of migraines.

Migraleve yellow is just paracetamol and codeine - basically pain killers
Migraleve pink is paracetamol, codeine and buclizine (the anti-nausea ingredient). This has been unavailable since July last year, but I've heard that it might be on its way back within th next few months.

That’s why I couldn’t get it then! That’s the only thing that worked.

I’ve taken one tablet about 1.5 hours ago, don’t feel sick but head hurts still although not as painful..... only 6 tablets in a pack!

So buccastem is only for the nausea, you'll still want a painkiller :)

Ask your doctor or pharmacist about sumatriptan (Imigran) - total game-changer.

Inbedbynine · 12/07/2019 15:14

Whaaaaaat?! No pain killer in them?! Bastards. Iv only got co codamol and don’t like to take too much as gives me a dizzy head.

Not heard of imigran. Is it for pain as well as nausea? I always get the nausea and I hate that.

No advise but I got two packs of migraleve pink from Lloyd’s pharmacy last week as I know it’s been out of stock for ages

Ionacat · 12/07/2019 15:22

Go to the doctor and ask for help. There are lots of medications you can try. I tried sumatriptan but it didn’t work for me, so I take zolmitriptan and as mine have a pattern - hormonal and related to my cycle, I take them for two days a month as a preventive measure. I was also advised to carry and take a couple of dextrose tablets if I felt a migraine coming on too.

Fromage · 12/07/2019 15:33

I second seeing a doctor.

I've had lots of things but the best so far has been sumatriptan. It's cheaper on prescription than over the counter as you get more in a prescription (6 or 8 I think) and only 2 OTC.

Sumatriptan isn't a painkiller like paracetamol/ibuprofen/codeine etc It works by narrowing blood vessels in your brain, which stops pain signals and it does something else that is to do with stopping the release of chemicals that affect nausea and dizziness. In other words, you can take painkillers alongside but please double check this with a pharmacist/your GP.

Triptans can stop the entire migraine in its tracks if you take them early enough - pain, nausea, the lot gone within 20 minutes.

Migraleve are now back in stock, I would imagine most pharmacies would now have a supply. They came back about 3 weeks ago.

serenadoundy · 12/07/2019 15:45

Whatever you do don't fall asleep with the buccal tablet in your upper lip. I did this once and it slipped down and burnt my mouth while I slept. Work up feeling sore, and still sick!

Good news about Migraleve though, will be on the lookout for supplies.

Tr1skel1on · 12/07/2019 16:09

Ask your pharmacist for migritan, triptan medication without prescription

Ambydex · 12/07/2019 16:20

Co codamol is the same as migraleve pink minus the antinausea bit (paracetamol and codeine as britnay said) so if you'd be happy to take a migraleve, take the co codamol. Hope you have by now anyway.

PinkOboe · 12/07/2019 16:26

You need a triptan (sumatriptan etc) - get imigran and then get to the Dr and get it prescribed. it' a life changer. they can do a melting wafer for your tongue if you're likley to vom up a tablet

Inbedbynine · 12/07/2019 16:41

I forgot migraleve had co codamol in it. Glad it’s back in stock.

I don’t know my triggers other than lack of sleep (been awake some 1am and up since 4am) and stress.

Couple months back I ended up in hospital with suspected stroke but ended up a migraine, I never ever had one like that before, no speech, couldn’t see etc but they didn’t give me any drugs or anything to help just sent me on my way due to history of migraines.
