Please reassure me - chicken pox

Help! Please reassure me! Chicken pox is definitely only contagious 1 to 2 days before spots, right? My DD2 who is 3 was around a friend's little girl on Friday and she came out in spots yesterday. So five days after we saw them.

We are flying next weekend to see my family and I haven't been back to my home country in 3 years. Its also rebooked from last summer as we had to cancel for very shitty reasons (horrific injury left me in hospital and needing surgery).

I am going crazy with worry, I know if she breaks out we cant fly and it would just be devastating for it to happen 2 years in a row.

Please tell me she will be ok!

I've always read it as 1/2 days before and then until the spots have crusted over. I would imagine 5 days should be fine

I'm sorry to say that there is a chance she could have been contagious. You saw her 3 days before her spots came out but she could have had a couple of spots on Sunday and they just didn't notice until they multiplied yesterday. I just don't want to give you false definite hope when I believe there is a chance.

Go and get the vaccination for your DD now. It may prevent her getting CP and if she is incubating it it'll lessen the illness.

@Blubluboo we saw her Friday and first spots were last night so it was 5 days since we saw her not 3....

@lumpy76 would it really make a difference? If she is incubating it we would still not be able to fly. If she doesn't get it though I will seriously consider it. My oldest DD had it very mildly when she was 4 but I had it badly as a child so been in two minds about the vaccine...

A couple of things:
Chickenpox isnt massively contageous
She is right at the earliest incubation period to come out in spots before you fly - you may get chickenpox while you are away. Pack for this.

Wishing you a chickenpox free, fabulous trip home.

Sorry ignore me.... I thought it was Tuesday today. Kind of happy that it is now closer to the weekend than I thought!
My point still stands about her maybe having spots the day before yesterday. But yes, I'd say you're probably ok then.

WatchingTheWheels85 · 11/07/2019 07:48

You could be ok. My youngest child caught it at 3 but his sister 5 didn't come out in spots until 3 weeks after his first appeared.

lumpy76 · 11/07/2019 07:55

@cakeinmyface even if she's incubating it the vaccination can stop it from actually developing, though this isn't guaranteed. I had friends who did this when one of their children came down with chicken pox just before a massive family holiday (15 people) to Florida. One of the cousins (all meet everyday) came down with CP - he was given anti virals to shorten the length of the illness and the other children all vaccinated. None of the other children got CP.

CakeInMyFace · 11/07/2019 08:20

@lumpy76 how would I go about getting it for her? Will GP do it or do I have to book in privately?

@lumpy76 are there side effects?

KatnissMellark · 11/07/2019 08:21

Boota and superdrug do it. You can book online.

lumpy76 · 11/07/2019 09:23

@CakeInMyFace two of my children have had the vaccination. Despite it being a live vaccine they had no side affects at all. From research it's a very affective and well tolerated vaccine. You'll have to go private for it. Worth every penny imo!

speadyourwingsandflyaway · 11/07/2019 11:28

My daughter had the vaccine recently. No side effects. Worth it IMO (she is 6 and chickenpox has been round her class a couple of times, and it went round nursery loads, but she didn't get it).
