Vaping to stop smoking. Has it worked for you?

I have smoked on and off for years, mostly on. I do well with stopping and then I end up smoking socially and it starts all over again. I hate smoking, I hate the smell and the cost, and of course for health reasons.

I have used champix in the past and it works but then the social thing crops up again and it is all over. I thought I could get a vape and use that while I cut down and eventually stop. Then when I am in a social situation I will be used to the vape and will have that instead.

I don’t like the look of the big ones but I have seen a nice slim one. Has vaping worked for you and is it best to use nicotine juice or nicotine free juice?

Thanks

Yes it has worked. I started smoking mid thirties and am 44 now so have not been a smoker since I was a teenager or anything. I was a light smoker too. I began by taking my vape out with me only and I have been completely stopped for 16 weeks. I am on the lowest level of nicotine liquid now and I have zero cravings.

MagentaRocks · 10/07/2019 20:59

Thank you. That’s amazing. I really do want to stop. I did really well at the start of the year then MIL visited and I used to like sitting outside with her with a cigarette so it slowly started again. I am going to order one and plenty of juice so I don’t run out and then give it a go.

I stopped nearly 5 years ago using an aspire vape (slim one not chunky box-like thing). Have not touched a cigarette since and was a heavy smoker. Only use tobacco flavoured juice with a low nicotine content. But I used a high nicotine juice when I first stopped smoking.

ScreamingValenta · 10/07/2019 21:06

It didn't work for me - I couldn't find a vape that didn't make me cough. Also, I struggled because a cigarette has a fixed duration whereas a vape doesn't, so the 'ritual' didn't work.

Hope you have more luck.

TheCatDidSay · 10/07/2019 21:07

I smoked for 14 years heavily. Tried stopping a few times but it didn’t work till I was just in a shop saw a vape a cheap one like £5 and though hey it’s worth ago. I vaped for three days then went cold turkey haven’t smoked for 8months now even though dh does and sometimes gets me to roll for him still.

This thread is just what I need right now.
Sick to death of smoking. I hate the smell, and the hold it has aswel as health and financial implications.

I'm a twat because I gave up three years ago for over two years using a vape with nicotine flavour liquid.
Didn't think I'd ever smoke again but went through a real rough patch and lo and behold it crept in again.

Even buying cheaper tobacco it's still costing me and the longer I leave it the worse it is for my health. I'm so angry at myself for not being abled to do it again this time.
I have a vape I bough a couple of months ago in preparation but I charge it put it in my bag and then by tobacco.

This thread could be perfect for us all to support each other Grin

I stopped smoking January 2018 after smoking for about 35 years. I’ve given up many times with various degrees of success. I don’t even think about smoking any more. I’d suggest going to a vape shop and testing the oils to find one you like. I personally don’t like the fruit flavours, my preferences are the caramel or cake flavours.

Grimbles · 10/07/2019 21:11

Why do you think a vape will prevent you from smoking in a social situation?

Not getting at you btw, I smoked for 20yrs and vaping didn't work for me.

ShinyButtons · 10/07/2019 21:16

It worked for me! I'd recommend going into a vape shop where they let you try different juices and find one you like.

springydaff · 10/07/2019 21:17

Hmm well it kind of did and didn't work for me, probably because I had no intention of stopping vaping - as far as I was concerned it was a lifestyle choice. I enjoyed it very much and felt so sorry for people still enslaved to stinky fags.

Then I got really ill (unrelated) and wanted to get rid of anything that wasn't healthy. Stopped vaping cold turkey - oh my goodness, it was hell. I was probably saturated in nicotine bcs you can vape anywhere (or I did anyway), far higher than normal smoking bcs of how often I did it.

So I went back on the vape and then saw a stop smoking nurse, which did it for me (patches). I was serious, mind.

The thing is op it's that first fag - in fact drag - that gets you right back to the addiction absolutely immediately. We can't have just one.

I vaped for a while using zero nicotine juice. Then I gradually forgot to take it out with me and eventually realised I'd completely stopped.

Good luck! You have to be desperate serious.

Worked for DH who smoked 20 a day for 27 years and started vaping 13 months ago. He always said he would never give up as he enjoyed it too much (he tried twice when DD was little including having hypnotherapy but that failed). Last year he was having pains in his lungs after a big work trip so switched to vaping and hasn't looked back. He decreased the nicotine over a few months and now has none. He doesn't actually use the vape much. He did gain weight at first but has lost it now.

myoctopus · 10/07/2019 21:25

Worked for me, I did both for a while, sometimes smoked, sometimes vaped just saw every cigarette not smoked as a victory and very gradually without me even really noticing I stopped smoking altogether.

I was on quite strong vape liquid but am working on reducing that but I don't really care if I vape forever now.

MagentaRocks · 10/07/2019 21:27

@grimbles because I can still vape and feel the social side of it. I'm pleased it has worked for people.

@myoctopus that's what I am hoping for

Yes, I switched to vaping over a year ago, after smoking for around 20 years. I was smoking around 20 a day when I switched. It did take a few attempts to get the right vape and juice. I found the pen ones useless as I really enjoy the throat ‘hit’ and didn’t find them powerful enough. But I also don’t like anything too chunky. At the moment I’m using a Smok Nord but before that I had an Innokin cool fire mini with a nautilus 2 tank. Both great for me and finally helped me quit for good. I’ve also found I only really like cherry/fruit menthol type juices. I started at 12mg nicotine and am now at 3mg and looking into dropping again soon. I plan to try to get to no nicotine and then stop altogether, but not rushing it.
The best thing for me was going to a decent vape shop and asking for advice, I was a bit wary at first but they’ve been really helpful. Good luck. It’s been the best thing I’ve done really. I thought I’d never quit.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 10/07/2019 21:32

I smoked 20+ a day for 25 years, I bought a vape because I had to do something I didn't want to vape but I didn't want to smoke. I thought I would maybe do both which would cut down the cigarettes.
I haven't touched a cigarette from the moment I picked up the vape 4 years ago.

StumpyinSomerset · 10/07/2019 21:33

I was a 40-60 a day smoker 6 years ago. I got introduced to vaping by my ex. Best thing he did for me.

I started off with 24mg nic juices. I'm now on 3mg/6mg.

I hate tobacco flavours - I use dessert flavours.

I couldn't ever go back to smoking. My chest is 100% better and I don't have yellow stained fingers or teeth. I've saved money too. Win win.

Grimbles · 10/07/2019 21:34

So if someone offered you a cigarette you would be able to say no?

If you run out of juice/battery, etc. you would be able to resist cigs?

I thought I could vape instead of smoke, but the 'just one wont hurt' mentality still persisted.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 10/07/2019 21:34

Also I moved pretty quickly from a pen to a bigger machine , if I hadn't I don't think I'd have carried on vaping.

Qwerty09876 · 10/07/2019 21:35

I have gave up tooGrin
Honestly I never wanted too but the price of cigarettes was leaving me with nothing!
To the point of what do I buy a packet of cigs or milk, which I seriously thought was stupid and pathetic!
My money issues have stopped I can treat the kids more and not scrapping the copper jar to buy milk.
I only like certain flavours of vape oils and I'm on 16mg nicotine and I haven't touched a fag for quite some time now, however I do find it more addictive to actually smokes cigs it's constantly in my hand Grin

MagentaRocks · 10/07/2019 21:35

I was going to order one on line but I think I will go to a shop. I'm on nights tonight so I might go when I get up tomorrow. Might as well bite the bullet and get started.

Thank you

Not personal experience but have known a few people who've moved to vaping and then quit both entirely :)

MagentaRocks · 10/07/2019 21:36

@grimbles I honestly don't know but if I don't try I will never know.

OP posts:
Greensleeves · 10/07/2019 21:38

Sorry for butting in, but the vape juice dh bought says 1.2%, does anyone know what that would be in mg? Is it really low nicotine?

I quit using vape 5 years ago, but then my dad got cancer and all hell broke loose, and I went back on the fags Sad

Desperately want to quit again, but vaping doesn't seem to be doing the trick for me this time.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 10/07/2019 21:38

I've never run out of liquid or battery it's one of my main priorities Grin but I can't ever imagine me smoking a cigarette I never think 'just one'.
I think if it had been a struggle I wouldn't have stuck it it's not something I had to work at or force. If it had been I think I would have gone back to smoking. It wouldn't have been the right time.
