2 year DS just fell asleep...help!

Just caught DS falling asleep on the sofa at 4:15pm. I tried to stand him up and wake him but he was asleep standing, so I've left him.

He is going through a long transition to dropping his nap and hasn't napped since Saturday. He woke at 6:30 this morning.

Shall I let him have 20 mins and ride out a late bedtime or carry him up to bed, hope he sleeps through and deal with the early morning tomorrow?

WWYD?

What time is it where you are? You can't seriously put him to bed at 4.30!

Gunpowder · 10/07/2019 16:36

My 19month old has fallen asleep too! He fell asleep on the floor. I’m going to let him sleep till 5 then feed him and do bedtime as usual.

ChicCroissant · 10/07/2019 16:37

What is a long transition? Do you mean you are trying to get him to drop his nap?

Either wake him now, or accept the late bed time. There's no middle ground here.

When dropping naps, I think you have to adjust your overall schedule for a while. So with DD we sort of moved between nap days and non nap days. On non nap days we put her to bed super early and she'd probably have a nap the next day.

Then after a few weeks of that we dropped the nap completely but she was in bed every night by about 6. And of course, the classic - sleep begets sleep thing would kick in. If we put her to bed at normal time of 7 or 7 :30 she'd be up early. Bed at 6 and she'd sleep straight through until after 7 the next morning. I don't think they can cope with just going cold turkey - they still need the sleep, you just have to adjust the timings.

Let him have 20 mins.
10 mis extra play after dinner, bit of extra time in the bath tonight, and an extra book.

Thanks, I'll wake him up.

On non nap days hes been pretty good and had an early bedtime, I think its caught up with him and hes just crashed.

Not sure I understand about the long transition thing, but a lot of 2 year olds still have an afternoon nap, so I don’t think it’s anything to worry about.

Good sleep habits, including a nap if necessary will help with night time sleeping.

spiderlight · 10/07/2019 16:46

I'd let him sleep for a bit. He obviously needs it, and he'll be miserable all evening if you wake him. Mine went through a long phase of sleeping from 3 until 6 and then being wide awake until 9 - I just accepted that that was how his body clock was wired, crammed everything I needed to do into naptime and endured the late bedtimes for a few years months.

Qcumber · 10/07/2019 16:47

My 3 year old struggles to go all day without a nap. She sleeps for about 2 hours after lunch and then goes to bed at 7. Up any time from 5.30-7.00.
He may still need a little sleep a bit earlier in the day to keep him going?

BentNeckLady · 10/07/2019 16:47

If he’s eaten already I’d put him in bed but expect an early morning.

My dd went to bed at 6 until she was about 3 and slept until 6. Half 4 is only an hour and a half earlier than that.

MrTumblePulledAKnifeOnMe · 10/07/2019 16:54

Well I woke him up 10 mins ago, gave him a snack and hes gone to sleep again 😆.

Ref long transition I mean he hasn't gone cold Turkey, started napping every other day, then 3 days, varying lengths etc. Its a long process to stopping the nap completely.

Put him to bed then. the chances are he won't wake as early as you expect. If you can get some milk or water down him, so much the better.

BlingLoving · 10/07/2019 16:56

A friend put her DD to bed at 5:30 for months....

Fuzzyspringroll · 10/07/2019 16:57

DS is 2.5. He still naps for 1.5-3 hours after lunch both at nursery and at home. His key worker says him and his little friend could spend the whole day in bed. No issues at night. He sleeps 8pm-7am regardless.

MrTumblePulledAKnifeOnMe · 10/07/2019 17:06

He's awake again 🤦‍♀️, he woke while I was getting his milk ready, waited by the stairs wanting to go up, so I think hes ready for an early night. Will give him tea and try for bed at 6 🤞

My DD sometimes had a power nap around this time if she had been very active. We never let her sleep more than 20 mins and put her to bed normal time and she went to bed fine. She was cranky when we woke her up from the nap though...

ChicCroissant · 10/07/2019 17:08

Ah, so he's still having the odd nap then. He's probably just shattered in the heat!

I'd let him sleep in that case, although having said that he sounds impossible to keep awake anyway (I'd have let my DD sleep but she is a night owl anyway).

Sirzy · 10/07/2019 17:14

Let him sleep.

As an adult I sometimes need to go to bed an hour or so early to catch up so why wouldn’t a child sometimes?

User8888888 · 10/07/2019 17:35

My 3 year old can’t really cope without a nap. She can do one day but anymore and she start dropping off to sleep at 4- 4.30 and is totally grotty. That to me is a sign that she’s not quite ready to drop yet. If she could get to 5.30 I’d give an earlier bed time a go but I’ve learnt the hard way no napping just makes her miserable.

theneverendinglaundry · 10/07/2019 17:56

My youngest was 3 in April and still has days when she will fall asleep, usually during the afternoon school run. Even if she only has 10 minutes it turns bedtime into a disaster! I do everything I can to keep her awake.

Hope you have an easy bedtime!

MrTumblePulledAKnifeOnMe · 11/07/2019 01:38

Well he finally fell asleep at 9:30, which isn't too bad as he usually needs 6-7 hours awake time before bed.
