So the great Summer is upon us, and everyone is (rightly) told to drink lots of water .However is it necessary to up your salt intake or not?.My Family laugh ,and say too much salt is not good(obviously not in usual temperatures)!.I just ask because I always put a bit extra on food to compensate for amount lost in sweating ,exercises etc.Just wondered what everyone else thought

No I don’t. I’d only think about it if I were going for a very long run and it would be in my drink.

There’s enough salt in your food as it is.

Yes, I eat some salted pistachio nuts to get a boost if I've been sweating. I get tired, weak and headachey if I don't. A bit of sugar helps as well.

If it’s really really hot you can drink the rehydrate powders in water, we lived overseas and had to take them now and again. When you sweat you lose salt which can get dangerous.

On holiday in hot weather I naturally crave salty foods. I think your body knows what it needs.

Absolutely. Salt is an important electrolyte for your body. People who eats lots of snacky foods like crisps and chocolate or takeaways maybe don't need as much, but salt isn't present in massive amounts in ordinary food (except deli meats/other meats), so you may need to supplement e.g. small amounts of bicarbonate soda and to salt your food to taste.

I mostly eat home-cooked meals and don't tend to add much salt but I do find myself craving salty snacks in the warmer weather. Like ineedaknittedhat, I also sometimes need a little sugar boost too, a sparkling drink does it for me.
