Been asked to see nurse for swabs - after a UTI?

Was diagnosed with a UTI two weeks ago - lot of bleeding and pain - now onto third lot of antibiotics after the first two didn’t work . On Monday they said they suspect the infection has hit my kidney . Taken nitrofurantoin and coamoxiclav, still absolutely shattered .

GP surgery rang this morning said per last results of urine sample they now want me to come in for an internal and vaginal swabs . I’m guessing the sample has grown something suggesting thrush or something like that ? Receptionist wasn’t sure - just said something about high levels of ‘pus cells’ and I can’t get the swabs done for another week . Presuming that’s so that the antibiotics are done .

Does anyone know if it’s relatively normal , to end up needing swabs etc as well as antibiotics ? I’d have been quite happy to go and just take thrush treatment OTC but receptionist said they really need to do a proper exam etc . No chance it’s an STI thankfully ... although maybe that’s what they’re suspecting and don’t realise there’s no chance !

It may just be precautionary, since the abx arent doing anything to alleviate the symptoms. After all those, I suspect the GP would have expected some improvement.

That’s what I was wondering , if it’s maybe something else instead . I’ve still got stinging when I wee although not as bad . Hopefully settles soon .

I had this. UTI symptoms with pus in the urine sample. A very snotty nurse told me to get a chlamydia test. I knew I didn’t have it but dutifully trotted off to get tested. I was 100% clear of everything.

Best thing to do is find your local sexual health clinic. They can probably fit you in quicker and are really lovely. They tested for everything including thrush and bacterial vaginosis.
