How much to remove a large shrub?

Posting here for traffic.

We have a big, shrubby olive tree in the garden, it's now about 3m tall and must be about 5 years old. It's very bushy, we've never pruned it. This year for some reason it's flowered for ages and we are all allergic to the pollen. I'm not sure why it hasn't been a big issue in previous years (we've lived here for 3).

I am pregnant so can't take anything for hayfever (apart from prevalin which isn't effective enough outside) and so I can't use the garden. DH and DS are going out but armed with Piriton. I read that olive tree pollen is especially fine so that might explain how sensitive we are to it.

DH has booked a gardener to remove it, but they wouldn't give a quote over the phone Hmm. No one else he rang was answering. I don't like not knowing how much it might be!

DH reckons because we're not having the stump removed it will cost about £70. I reckon it will cost about £200. We're both stabbing wildly in the dark though. Can anyone give us an idea of the cost? We live on the south coast.

sounds odd but could you advertise it for free, proving the person who wants it will remove it themselves?

loads of people would be happy to take it I bet!

Can't your husband just trim the flowers off?

Summertimeatthebeach · 10/07/2019 11:12

Just don't ring a round asking for volunteers to trim your bush!!

Definitely not going to be requesting a bush trim! Grin

That is a lovely tree. I would see if someone would like to dig it up and take it away. You could advertise it on e-bay or freecycle.

We pay 350 a day for two men for tree removal. It's not the taking it down that's the issue, it's the cutting it uo and removing it that takes time, I'd reckon that could be done in a couple of hours max. I assume someone will charge you for a mornings work.

Stump removal is very very expensive, as it's ground out using specialist machinery. It's wat more expensive than removing the tree. I'd personally just leave the stump

There is no way you'll get anyway to do it all for 70 quid and I doubt you'd get it done for 200 either.

Hmm I'll definitely have a chat with DH about freecycle. Worth a try!

If we trimmed the flowers off (aside from getting drenched in pollen!) we'd basically be taking off all the foliage, and we'd also be in the same position next year.

Do you know that olive trees this size could sell for around £300-400. If you put an advert on FB marketplace, offer it for sale for £100 to be dug up and taken away. Win win

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 10/07/2019 12:26

Its lovely. I'm sure someone would come and take it. Just make sure there's nothing nesting in there and check for hedge hogs first. When we took down some shrubbery we found a little group of frogs underneath. They all hopped off but I did feel guilty

LittleAndOften · 10/07/2019 16:07

Well... It's gone!

I've been working upstairs and when I came down the job had been done! DH had a call back from someone who swung by with his big truck and lopped it off for £30.

I was seriously contemplating freecycle, but at least I can use the garden again now Grin

Thanks for all your advice!
