I’m having tomatoes on toast for breakfast and remember being offered that for breakfast in NZ on my first long haul trip 30 years ago when I was 18 and thinking ....bloody hell tomatoes on toast ...how sophisticated is that.

My parents had a punch bowl with little cups that hung on hooks all around. I thought that was extra fancy :)

fishonabicycle · 10/07/2019 10:48

I went to Australia about 35 years ago. I was so impressed with myself eating sashimi, drinking saki, and then avocado and alfalfa on rye! Never had any of them at home!

Enclume · 10/07/2019 10:52

Individually wrapped tea bags still give me a thrill.

So do After Eight mints. I don't care if you can get them in Poundland... still posh.

ChihuahuaMummy1 · 10/07/2019 10:57

Olives

EileenBilton · 10/07/2019 10:59

late eighties: ordered a cheese sandwich in a cafe and it was served with coleslaw and crisps.

AmateurSwami · 10/07/2019 10:59

Avocado in a salad age 18 Grin

maidenover · 10/07/2019 11:18

Chicken Kievs really were the height of sophistication in the 80s, I also remember thinking they were the fanciest tea ever.

I also remember the first time my Dad cooked Chinese food, I’d never had a take away at that point, my mind was blown

The neopoliatana (?) ice cream my grandparents bought for us. We only ever had vanilla at home. This was vanilla, chocolate AND strawberry in ONE tub!!

BlueMerchant · 10/07/2019 13:26

Travelling alone on a 2.5 hour train journey I felt like I was worldly wise (especially as I had to change train) I was 18.Grin
Doing the grocery shop when I moved to uni. I would buy fresh pasta and think I was so classy.

Frownette · 10/07/2019 13:33

Not exactly with food as I was introduced to all sorts from an early age.

I thought I was wildly sophisticated for buying a rimmel eyeshadow kit from boots when I was 12 (think it was pink and blue Blush), bloke buying bottle of red wine and cooking dinner when I was 18, first payslip, buying first designer dress at 20. Still have that dress actually. And the payslip.

Driving! The first time I drove myself to the supermarket, it felt like the pinnacle of grown-upness and sophistication. I felt as though I had become part of the adult world for the first time. I was 27!

StCharlotte · 10/07/2019 13:54

dinner with all these famous comedians and ambassadors

I'm trying to imagine how the conversation might have gone...

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 10/07/2019 15:57

I was given a box of Thorntons chocolates by a boy when I was about 12.

That seemed the height of sophistication to me!

managedmis · 10/07/2019 15:58

back in the seventies the classic bernie in meal prawn cocktail for starter, steak with the trimmings for main and black forest gateaux for afters felt very la di da i was only 16 at the time,

GinghamChicken · 10/07/2019 16:12

Aged 16 and drinking vodka and lime in a pub because I didn't know what to ask for. Nearly bankrupted my boyfriend.

TeaAddict235 · 10/07/2019 16:16

For me it wasn't eating anything in particular, but wearing a leather bag that I had bought with my own money when I was about 18 and a GAT with a buddy. I thought that I was the bee's knees, the dog's dinner, ...... I felt so grown up.

TheCatThatDanced · 10/07/2019 16:17

avocado, spagetti bolognese or most Italian dishes. Veal escallopine (yes I know it's cruel).

GnomeoNameo · 10/07/2019 18:45

Malibu and pineappple - in the mid-Eighties.

Happynow001 · 10/07/2019 18:54

The first time I ordered Coquilles St Jacques followed by Steak au Poivres. Can't remember the circumstances around the dinner - but I can remember the taste of the food!

Happynow001 · 10/07/2019 19:00

Having a lovely lunch in the restaurant carriage of a train en route to Scotland (I think) and ordering a half carafe of wine with my meal. I felt so sophisticated!

A long ago memory!

TSSDNCOP · 10/07/2019 19:01

Ordering a Long Island Ice Tea at the bar in TGI in London.

Being taken to a casino in Mayfair at Christmas by a bunch of lovely city boys with too much money and lovely manners.

Going out for our birthday dinners as a child to the upstairs seated restaurant of a fish restaurant. The starter list had orange Joyce and the ice cream came as different flavoured balls in a silver bowl.

Buyitinbamboo · 10/07/2019 19:09

I remember going to cafe Nero with my friend for the first time at 16. We didn't know what any of the drinks were so I sensibly ordered a latte. He ordered an espresso and was devastated when it came out in the tiny cup, tasting like strong coffee 😂

KittenSnuggler · 10/07/2019 19:10

A Vesta Chow Mein when I was about 10. It was so different from the usual stuff we used to eat when I was a kid. And of course now I know it was nothing like actual Chinese food!

Me and my DB bloody loved it though and it became a Saturday ritual and treat that my DF would make for us when my DM was out.

I've just googled it and you can still buy it. I think I might have to get one just for nostalgia!

TheClitterati · 10/07/2019 19:13

Raw oysters. First I felt brave and then posh. Yum yum.

I'm from nz and have eaten tomatoes on toast (preferably Vogel's) all my life.
