My baby hasn't fed for hours

DS was last fed at 3.45. He's been asleep since about 8.

Should I wake him to feed? He's 10 weeks old and is gaining weight as he should

Yes, I would. That’s a very long time for a young baby. Does he have a cold? Fever?

jonesy22 · 09/07/2019 23:46

@Thistles24 nope neither of those. I'm really worried Sad

Wake up, nappy change and a feed - although at this time he might be up for hours.....

He might be having a growth spurt- it can certainly knacker them out

Don’t panic, just wake him up and assess how he is with feeding etc.

Teddybear45 · 09/07/2019 23:52

Is he jaundiced? That often presents like this.

InvisibleHamster · 09/07/2019 23:52

I would wake him.

EyeDrops · 09/07/2019 23:53

Yes, I'd wake him to feed. Wouldn't worry, just see how he is when you wake/feed him, but I'd want him fed before a night-time sleep.

JacksHat · 09/07/2019 23:55

I agree, I’d wake him too. Nappy change first to make him more alert and likely to feed as suggest by PP. Did he refuse to feed at all before going to sleep? Is he FF or breastfed?

TheSheepofWallSt · 09/07/2019 23:57

BF or FF?
Any signs of illness?
Has he just had vaccinations?
How’s his temperature?
Is he stirring in his sleep?

artio0 · 09/07/2019 23:58

When mine was a few weeks old she would sometimes sleep for 9-12h as well (not anymore.....). I got different answers about waking her up from different midwifes. Some said a newborn needs to be woken up every 4h to be fed and some said to not worry and that she'll wake up when she's hungry (as long as her weight gain is on track). I tried waking her but that was usually impossible so in the end I just left her to it and her weight gain has always been fine.

That said, you're the mum and you know your baby better than anyone, if you're really worried I'd call someone for further advice. I can't remember if there's a 24h midwife or HV number in the early weeks after birth?? Or maybe 111?

Celebelly · 10/07/2019 00:01

I would but I wouldn't necessarily be worried about it. At that age my DD had some days where she was more asleep than awake it felt like, and she was regularly going 9+ hours without a feed overnight. If he's fine when you wake him and takes his feed, then he's probably just having a growth spurt.

jonesy22 · 10/07/2019 00:02

I woke him to change/feed. He felt a bit hot so I've given him a dose of calpol, nappy change and a bottle.

He seems absolutely fine though and is feeding with no problems

OP posts:
Iwanttoredecorateagain · 10/07/2019 00:03

Did he have a temperature though?

jonesy22 · 10/07/2019 00:05

@Iwanttoredecorateagain I don't have a thermometer Sad I'm stupid not to have one I know. I will get one tomorrow!

OP posts:
jonesy22 · 10/07/2019 00:05

He was quite hot to touch when I changed him

OP posts:
ohfourfoxache · 10/07/2019 00:06

Brilliant that he’s feeding fine, that’s a big relief. Sometimes they don’t have enough energy to have a feed, so it’s really reassuring that his bottle went down ok.

And if he is under the weather then the calpol should knock whatever it is on the head

jonesy22 · 10/07/2019 00:07

Now that I think of it he was quite grumpy yesterday. Perhaps he's coming down with something

OP posts:
ohfourfoxache · 10/07/2019 00:15

Keep an eye on him - if he stays hot or becomes restless or just “not right” then call 111, don’t be afraid to seek help. But a clean nappy, a good feed and a dose of calpol is exactly what I’d do (and prepare for a long night 🤦🏻‍♀️)

MrsMoastyToasty · 10/07/2019 00:18

Gently pinch the skin on the back of his hand. It should go back to normal if he's hydrated but stays wrinkled if not. (A GP told me this).

EAIOU · 10/07/2019 00:44

How often does he usually feed OP? Is it very warm where you are just now? I know theres been heatwaves in places

Great that he took a feed for you there.

jonesy22 · 10/07/2019 00:46

@EAIOU it varies, somedays he is hungrier than other days but usually he goes somewhere between 3-5 hours.

It's not really hot where I am at the moment either, about 16 degrees ish

OP posts:
jonesy22 · 10/07/2019 00:47

DS drained 7oz and is now back to sleep with no issues!

OP posts:
EAIOU · 10/07/2019 00:49

😮😮 7oz? Took my DD 6 months to tackle a 7oz bottle 😂😂😂

Glad to hear hes taking his fluids!

AndBreatheJustBreathe · 10/07/2019 00:50

DD1 used to have days around that age where she would sleep literally all day. I would have to waken her to give her a bottle and check she was ok and responsive and alert.

Must have just been growth spurts and I should have enjoyed the peace but i couldn’t relax for worrying about her! She would appear otherwise completely well and would be back to normal the next day 🤷🏻‍♀️

jonesy22 · 10/07/2019 00:50

@EAIOU yep and he still would have probably had more had I made it for him!
