Is menopause belly a thing???

Omg is this another joy of menopause, that weight gain is all on the tummy/ribs??

I've lost over a stone. My tummy doesn't seem to have shrunk at all. It's just all blubbery.
I am approx 8lb lighter than i was last summer, yet my clothes dont fit me any better around the tummy.

Is this a thing??? 😭

Stomach / visceral fat is often last bit of fat to go. You just have to continue your diet / exercise plan - you may not notice a huge difference monthly in terms of inches but you may over a longer timeframe.

Yes it is a thing. I’m relatively active, keeping weight stable, but my goodness I have acquired a horrendous belly since entering menopause.

RaymondReddington · 09/07/2019 23:00

Yes
It can be controlled by diet/lifestyle changes but it’ll be a thing that will go the minute you deviate. I’m early menopause in my 30’s and despite a slimish frame my belly is my nemesis. Feels like s losing battle every day.

I think it too. When I stand up fairly flat but when I sit there is a right bulging tyre!

SpanishFly · 09/07/2019 23:09

Mine seems to be my entire tummy, not just the lower abdomen. I look pregnant. Yet ironically it is the menopause.

The pregnant look feels horrible
I’ve had people ask when I was expecting just because my belly looked so prominent against my frame.

Limiting carbs, sugar, alcohol etc obviously helps

SpanishFly · 09/07/2019 23:13

Thanks. We go on holiday in a few days, and I'll resume losing weight when we return 💕

Thanks for posting this- I've been wondering myself! I'm perimenopausal and seem to have gone from a pear shape with relatively small waist and flat stomach to an apron-bellied yuk that can't see my fanny in the space of a year. Really have to take advice of pp and look at my sugar and alcohol intake.

And exercise. Needs to be vigorous, and include a mix of core, cardio & strength. Diet obviously important but exercise so crucial.

There evidence to show that nearly without realising it, women slow down a lot at this point - life in general not as hectic, children reared etc & without realising it their activity level diminishes & yet still taking in same number of calories.

Soola · 09/07/2019 23:32

Not for me but I’ve always kept myself slim. Although I am slightly wider all over than when I was in my 20s.

I do eat a lot less than I used to and it would be very easy to put on weight if I didn’t eat small portions or if I did eat a larger portion one day I make sure the next I readdress the balance by eating much less.

I do put on a few pounds when I’m on holiday and at Christmas but I’m very strict at losing it within a week.

I still eat everything I like but in small portions and it’s quite surprising at much less I need to consume in order to not gain weight.

groundanchochillipowder · 09/07/2019 23:37

Yes, it's a thing!

caringcarer · 09/07/2019 23:46

Yes it is definitely a thing. I went on HRT and put on 13lb in 13 weeks needless to say I came off of it but it took 18 months to lose it again and my stomach is still larger than it should be. If I put on a couple of pounds over Xmas it now goes straight around my gut. I think sit ups is the only thing that helps.

BackforGood · 09/07/2019 23:53

Yes, sadly. It is a thing.

DramaAlpaca · 09/07/2019 23:54

Yes Sad

MoltonSilver · 10/07/2019 00:17

Yes. I can't shift it.

EarringsandLipstick · 10/07/2019 00:22

I think sit ups is the only thing that helps.

Nope. This is a misconception. Sit ups help, site, they'll develop your muscles in that area reducing flab. But you need consistent, vigorous exercise, including a weights element, as well as watching diet.

Sorry to go on about it, of course everyone is affected differently but IMO, and from experience talking to others, most women in this bracket don't understand how important exercise is, including prevention of osteoporosis & muscle wastage.

EarringsandLipstick · 10/07/2019 00:22

*sure, not site

tumpymummy · 10/07/2019 00:24

Yes, unfortunately it is! I too have the menopause belly. Have always been slim, but since hitting the menopause I now look pregnant if I'm not careful with what I wear. I can only wear trousers with a zip fly and button at the top to keep my belly in. Tried on some jumpsuits recently - they looked ridiculous on me. I exercise 2-3 times a week but still can't shift the belly.

Pieceofpurplesky · 10/07/2019 00:25

I think menopause anything is a thing! There are so many things happening that I never knew would!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 10/07/2019 14:10

Definitely.. I'm 54 and was asked last week how long I had left to go!! Obviously I look pregnant
My 25 year old son was with me and didn't know where to lookSadGrin
