DD is starting her new school in September, and she has had a massive growth spurt and needs new clothes. She's just finished primary school, and has a lot of unicorn tshirts and things which I feel (though I haven't told her of course) will probably be seen as babyish in secondary school.

DD likes to look nice, but her main priority is comfort, as it should be. She doesn't know about brands or styles really. She's going from a small rural primary to a big town secondary. So far I've always kept her beautifully dressed, but like I say, it's all nice obvious things from the children's section and her school has been wonderfully lacking in any brand snobbery amongst the children

I know I'll probably get flamed for not encouraging her creativity or whatever, but I was bullied horrendously at secondary because I wore clothes that made me stick out like a sore thumb, my bag was like something my grandmother would carry, that sort of thing. I'm not planning on dressing DD head to toe in Versace but I want her to look like the normal, healthy, happy young girl she is. No doubt in a few years she'll have firmer ideas on dress, but right now, yes I do want her to be wearing the "right" clothes.

I had an idea that Jack Wills is popular - is this right? It all looks quite nice and normal, tshirts and the like. She needs new shoes as well, but I've no idea where to start. The school bag too.

Please be gentle. If you had experienced the bullying I did, you'd want your daughter to fit in too. Or at least not stand out because she looks like a homeless cult member.

I think leggings must be a regional thing though... none of the high school kids wear them here and wouldn’t be seen dead in them! It’s all about baggy jeans and wide leg jeans here (South Norfolk and Norwich). Very 90s.

Leggings/high waisted jeans and tops/jumpers cant go wrong. I always wore primark stuff and was never judged just branded trainers/shoes were the must have. Dont worry too much, kids can be cruel but I'm sure shes beautiful and lovely, shell be fine but well done for been aware!! xx

DD (Y8) likes Adidas tracksuit bottoms/leggings. Close fitting, not baggy. They're more substantial than plain old leggings! In winter, she's happy with a giant hoody from Primark. Hype used to be popular. When DSs were her age, I "trained" them to have cheap basics from places like Primark and then have, say' a branded hoody or t shirt to go with them. This seems to have serve them well.

My dd is a bit older, almost 14 but she wears pretty much everything mentioned already.

Primary is your best bet, arrange a trip there and she’ll get loads of stuff. Their skinny joggers and hoodies are fab for the money and their shorts are good too. In winter, the jumpers (again with leggings) are great.

Lots of people find jack wills expensive, but they always have some kind of sale. Or get your dd to get UNiDAYS, always a discount code on there. JW leggings are good quality and wash really well.

River island and M&S do good thick black leggings for peanuts. New Look 9-15 range is hugely popular and largely slogan free for tops. Abercrombie sale is brilliant and on right now.

I would get a few leggings, plain t-shirts and hoodies from somewhere like next. When she first has someone over to her house or has a mufti day at school take her shopping for a few more bits.

Don't forget that kids hate wearing coats at secondary. If any do, they tend to be quite short bodied parkas. Again check with her before you buy and maybe hold off until October to buy one.
