Trying to lose weight whilst still b'feeding

I'm on a daily diet of around 1000 cals a day; I'm also walking 1-2 miles with pram and only eating within an 8 hour window in the day. This isn't going to affect quality of my breastmilk, is it? Baby has just started proper food but still has plenty of milk feeds.

Im no expert but would that your diet and exercise will affect your milk. How old is baby and how often are you breastfeeding?

Chocolateychocolate · 08/07/2019 18:45

Baby is 6 months, feeds around every 3 hours now.

Way too low calories.

My milk supply went down when I cut my calories to 1400. Everyone is different but given that you are supposed to eat at least 1200 a day, I imagine 1000 will have a negative impact.

Chocolateychocolate · 08/07/2019 18:51

Thanks, but I don't think it can be too low as I'm still producing lots of milk, and barely losing any weight! I was thinking of dropping to 900 cals. I want to get back to 8 and a half stone (down from 9 and a half.)

The advice is not to go below 1500 when breastfeeding.
I have been dieting and I reduced to 1200 and noticed that DS’s sleep got worse, which I put down to my milk supply.

progestermoan · 08/07/2019 18:54

1000 calories a day will put you into starvation mode...that’s before adding the demands of breastfeeding into the mix.
I’d up it to 1500 and make sure everything is healthy and you do more walking

Emelene · 08/07/2019 19:03

Have you looked at slimming world? They have an adapted program for breastfeeding which is approved by the royal college of midwives.

I've lost over a stone. Smile

onetwofive · 08/07/2019 19:04

1000 definitely wayyyyyyy too few.

SudowoodoVoodoo · 08/07/2019 19:11

BFing will boost your calorie burn by about 300-500 calories?

1000 is very low at the best of times unless you are very sedentary and very small and definitely not BFing.

I lost my baby weight on about 1800 a day, and I'm short. It was basically my usual "maintain" diet with the bonus coming from the BFing difference.

I carried on eating but upped my exercise by leaping around to Mr Motivator video

www.amazon.co.uk/Mr-Motivator-Bums-Legs-Workout/dp/B00004R6MB?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Dont know what the modern equivalent is though!

Chocolateychocolate · 08/07/2019 19:22

Thanks for advice, all. I haven't gone to slimming world as I think they will say I don't need to lose weight? I'm 5'8 and want to be back to 8 and half stone? (size 8)

With my other 2 babies, the weight just dropped off (was a lot younger then!) but it's not happened this time.

Well tbh you don’t really need to lose weight. What is it about that specific number on the scale that you think is important? Why don’t you try increasing your activity rather than depriving yourself?

Chocolateychocolate · 08/07/2019 19:30

I just want to fit into my normal clothes again!

OP posts:
Vika1985 · 08/07/2019 19:35

Not really too sure what your motivation is in starting this thread, OP? Is it a stealth boast or do you suffer from some kind of disordered eating and need affirmation that you are already very slim?

TinyMystery · 08/07/2019 19:37

If you want to fit into your clothes, why not exercise more? You are a perfectly healthy weight and the way to build on that is to increase activity which will slim and tone. Starving yourself isn’t going to do your health or fitness any favours.

Chocolateychocolate · 08/07/2019 19:38

Uh, no, but I guess it would look that way to some. I just wondered if my milk quality would drop. The amount doesn't seem to have dropped at all.

OP posts:
Chocolateychocolate · 08/07/2019 19:39

I am trying to push up my walking from 2 miles to maybe 4 miles a day? Just nothing seems to be helping! But I guess that yes, that is better for my milk supply than dropping any more calories.

OP posts:
Waiting1987 · 08/07/2019 19:42

That would put you in the underweight category for you height. 8 and a half is too low. 1000 calories while breastfeeding is ridiculous.

Chocolateychocolate · 08/07/2019 19:47

Waiting, but I've always been that weight!

OP posts:
MsRosewater · 08/07/2019 19:59

I found it impossible to lose weight while breastfeeding! Was promised that it was the way to shed baby pounds but no dice- was walking +++, keeping an eye on calories and expressing to freeze in addition to EBF DD, I've since read that in some people hormones can make it more difficult and your body sort of hangs on to fat supplies rather than burning them....

MsRosewater · 08/07/2019 20:01

Any i was skinny pre-DD with relatively little effort (I now realise all too late to enjoy it..,)

Waiting1987 · 08/07/2019 20:11

It’s different naturally being very thin but you are now trying to force your body to be underweight. Increase exercise, would recommend 30 day Shred, and maybe you’ll lose inches rather than weight.

I did lose weight breastfeeding but only when I exercised a lot.

Bluetrews25 · 08/07/2019 20:19

You might be producing the same amount of milk, but it will probably be less nourishing / calorific for your DC. Starve yourself, starve your child.
Just to get back to your former far too low weight? Your shape is more important than your child? Hmm Please speak to your HV about this.

Chocolateychocolate · 08/07/2019 20:23

Bluetrews, my shape is not more important! That's why I was checking about the quality of my milk, as the amount I'm making is still good.
