New job contacted current employer when I've not handed my notice in yet!

I got a conditional job offer depending on DBS check and references.

I stupidly put my current employer as my reference and ticked the box to say not to contact them until I'd got the job. I've technically got the job so the company has contacted them! It's my own fault for being thick.

I've not mentioned this new job to my current employer as it wasn't set in stone and could be withdrawn at any time. I was told by the new job not to hand my notice in.

Anyway this morning my current employer has phoned me to ask why she's got this letter that says I've got a new job. I didn't know what to say so I lied and said I'd not been offered the job and wasn't sure why it said I had been. I said I'd seen the ad for the job and the hours were perfect for me so I just applied on the off chance! She then made her own assumption of it must be because it's working with vulnerable adults that they've sent it. She said she'd fill it in for me but we need to have a meeting when I'm back in work on Thursday. She sounded really pissed off about it. I think mostly because she must have thought I'd just got a new job and was going to do a flit.

I've actually actively been looking for a new job due to a bullying supervisor and the fact they never let me leave on time and change my hours at the last minute. I'm also awaiting CBT for my mental health and my current job won't accommodate the appointments.

I'm dreading it now. I'm shitting myself because I'm on probation and they might sack me! Which is fine if I definitely get the new job but knowing my luck the new job will say they don't want me.

I'm really panicking!

How can I handle this?

I don't see why it matters tbh. If the new employer offered you the job first, it would still be conditional on dbs and references. They could still withdraw the offer if they hadn't got the results they wanted. Just explain to your current employer at the meeting the reasons why you're not happy. They might want to keep you and make things better for you.
