Hi all,

I want to arrange a trip for DH, me and our DD (11) next year as he's always fancied NYC.

Would like to do 3 or 4 nights I think (is that enough?!) and do lots of iconic touristy things.

Would also like to splash out (a bit!) on a fancy, central hotel.

Please can you share your experiences (good or bad!) as well as your recommendations? Thank you kindly!

I blooming love New York!

Tips from me would be:
Buy a hop on hop off bus ticket. We had one that allowed us free entry to statue of liberty and empire state.
Do Top of The Rock in the daytime, but empire state at night (sunset is amazing!)
Artichoke Pizza is amazing and 3 slices for $17 was a real bargain!
Download the ulmon app - you can make lists of places you want to go / things you want to see on there and then the maps are available off line which is super helpful.
Brunch at 230 Fifth was amazing and has a great view of the empire state building.
Hotels - we've stayed at both The Wellington and fifty hotels and suites. Both good locations but would say the Wellington is looking a little bit tired. However, the best milkshake I've ever tasted is available at the coffee shop beneath the Wellington!
Have an amazing trip!!
X

That's super-helpful! Thank you!

We went last September. It was amazing but exhausting! I would go for 4 nights, you’ll struggle to fit it all in otherwise!

We got about by subway, it was pretty cheap and quick, easier than London, we just used an app. It’s worth getting pre-paid passes for entry, we got a city pass (you can get them with or without bus pass). That gives you entry to The Met, Empire State (which I loved), boat trip to Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, 9/11 museum (sensitively done and well worth a visit) and Top of the rock. TOTR charge extra for a sunset trip FYI! The city pass gives you queue jump privileges too which helps. We also went to the Hard Rock Cafe (amazing burgers!), Tiffany Grin, Times Square (go at night), Central Park (full of dog walkers, nannies and kids and joggers!). My friend said the Radio City music hall backstage tour is awesome but we couldn’t fit it in. Our absolute best night out was actually a Rangers game at Madison Square Gardens. I was a bit Confused about going to ice hockey, DH really wanted to go. It was so much fun! Great atmosphere, easy to follow, I’d highly recommend it if you’re in the right season.

We stayed at The Empire hotel (featured in ‘Gossip Girl’!). It was nice, it’s right by Colombus Circle. It’s got a pool and a rooftop bar.

Animum2 · 08/07/2019 16:51

Went for 3 days in 2016 and we did so much

Horse and cart ride round central park and a visit to the zoo

Hung around Times Square for a bit

Went up Empire State building
Went to ground zero by the subway, when we were there I got quite strange feeling about it, lots of tourists taking selfies as well, made me feel emotional remembering what happened there

Went on a river boat cruise past Statue of Liberty and surrounding areas

Went to the Dakota building and strawberry fields memorial for John Lennon

I would love to go again when it's cooler, went mid June and it was super hot but still loved it

CaptainMarVell · 08/07/2019 17:08

I don't understand people who go to New York for 3 nights, the first time we went for for 7 and the second time for 5 Grin there's just so much to see and do!

We've done ESB and TOTR both day and night, if you're doing daytime I definitely recommend first thing in the morning - we did ESB at 8am and didn't queue at all. We decided not to go to Central Park Zoo but went to Bronx Zoo instead - much bigger, and free admission one day a week. We went a bit beyond Manhattan - we had 7 day subway passes so went down to Coney Island, to Corona Park to see the unisphere, to Roosevelt Island (the cable car from there to Manhattan is great to see New York from another perspective and is covered by the subway pass), we went on the Staten Island ferry, and our second visit we went up the Statue of Liberty. We also LOVED the sports games we got tickets to, basketball and ice hockey.

springydaff · 08/07/2019 18:25

I absolutely adore NY.

We landed 5 minutes before the massive East coast power 'outage' and the whole place was in uproar!! No hotel booking - lost in the ether Shock

But we got to see the famous NY spirit. We could easily have stayed out - and had a great time, the atmosphere was like carnival. But dc were young teens and dh wasn't with us so I tried to find somewhere to stay. The only availability was the Benjamin hotel = absolute heaven! It is a famous 'sleep' hotel: heavenly mattresses, pillows etc. It was bliss. I assume the Waldorf had free rooms too lol. Insurance paid for it all.

I loved the atmosphere there. I'd move there in a heartbeat and the kids feel the same. Have a great time you lucky thing!

LittleScottish · 08/07/2019 18:27

Aah! It all sounds so exciting!

I'm looking at 3-4 nights as we want to do it in a bit of luxury (naice hotel etc) so I need to keep an eye on the pennies!

My one worry is that its overwhelmingly busy, as opposed to just bustling!

TSSDNCOP · 08/07/2019 18:31

Don't go shopping: it's rubbish. Unless you are downtown.

Do get the bus tour. Do get the ferry around Liberty. Go in a helicopter.

Don't stay in mid-town the rooms are pokey, stay downtown.

Brunch is fab in SoHo/Greenwich etc as is dinner.

Go to a show. We've seen the Lion King and Mathilda.

Does DD skate or scooter? DS has done both in Central Park.

Do the Highline, The Met, The Natural History and Ellis Island.

firstimemamma · 08/07/2019 18:43

We splashed out on the park lane hotel. It's on a corner of Central Park and is amazing!

Intrepid sea, space and air museum (11 year old might enjoy this the most and it includes going in a submarine!)

Brooklyn bridge

Central Park zoo

Top of the rock observatory (better views than Empire State Building imo)

Be prepared to tip generously when it comes to food.

Enjoy!

VenusClapTrap · 08/07/2019 18:49

The High Line is my favourite New York thing.

user1519475227 · 08/07/2019 19:01

I’ve broken it down to attractions, food and bars and place near each other.

Get a weekly metro card for $33, even if you are going for a shorter time I would highly recommend one as NYC is massive and everything is quite far apart. The only problem with the underground is, it only goes it straight lines. We only encountered one issue on it but apart from that it’s the same as getting the tube.

Time square – I would go (walk through) on a an evening as there are a few entertainers but don’t get sucked in to getting photos or anything as if you do you will get harassed! Macys is just down from times square and is worth going into, apparently they clap you into store when it opens.

We walked ½ way over Brooklyn bridge from Manhattan side and got our photo, however I know on the Brooklyn bridge side there is a street called Washington street and you can get a photo with the whole of Brooklyn bridge in it. We did spend a day in Brooklyn and went to Grimaldis for pizza, next door there is Juliana’s – both were recommended to us and we went to Grimaldis – it was nice and I thought reasonably priced as the pizzas are big, I it think that was around $35 for both of us.

Central park – was great, we just walked around it but it was massive so didn’t get to see it all, I did want to do a tour on the peddle car things but didn't have time but - If you look at Frankie’s legs on Facebook this is who we was going to use after recommendations from the Facebook group NYC the place to be. Do go and have drinks at LOBO in the park and watch the row boats. If the sun is out get a picnic and just people watch – you see lots of nannys and kids

Trump Towers – I thought was great for happy hour – its really just a bar and a Starbucks and a restaurant.

Tiffany’s – a must whist in nyc – all are really friendly – I think we managed to get about 3 glasses of champagne –Tiffany’s and trump towers are next door to each other

Rockefeller building – we didn’t go up it to see the empire state instead we went to the bar I think it is called rainbow room? You still get a view of the empire state building but without getting cold and a glass of wine in hand!

Flatiron building – you cant really go inside but good to look at, and just up from it is a small dog park – we got side-tracked and looked at all the dogs. Just opposite it is Eatlily – Italian supermarket / like 6 restaurants – sadly we didn’t have time to eat in there but is on my list for next time

Empire State Building – didn’t go up it but you can see it everywhere!

5th Ave – its long! Has every shop you can think of

St Patrick’s cathedral – didn’t have time

Ghost busters building – must get a photo from out it – its smaller than I thought it would be

Friends apartment – sadly we didn’t have time

Grand central station – must do - the whispering corners, it also has a large food court and market, look up at the ceiling when you enter.

United nations building – we walked over to it but there isn’t much to do in that area

Walk the High line down to Chelsea market but don’t forget to stop and take in all the art work, once at Chelsea market I would recommend going to Los Tacos No 1 – they are like $3 a taco and really nice – there is so much food choice you will be spoilt! Go hungry

Financial district

The 9/11 memorial is outside the 9/11 museum – download the 9/11 museum app and take headphones with you – it saves you from building the audio there and you will need it. After there is a pub down the road called O’Haras – go in for a drink afterwards its has lots of police, fire and army badgfes as that’s where they all went after 9/11

The oculus mall is opposite the 9/11 newly build and the design is good and it is huge!
One world observatory is also opposite – we didn’t go up it though

There is a another museum called - 9/11 tribute which is run by family members and survivors but we didn’t do it as DH thought we’d had enough for one day.

Century 21 – like TKmaxx but better – all designer brands and you can get Levis for like £21 so a must go

Wall street – great to walk down
If you have time catch the Staten island ferry which is free, sadly we didn’t have time but apparently the views of NYC are good.
The charging bull figure is also in the financial district – the ques for a photo were massive but be prepared to que jump – as no one ques proberly!

Trinity church is in this areas as well

The dead rabbit bar is lovely – I think its one of the top 20 bars in the world – we managed to get a seat at the bar and stopped for about 3 hours! Around the corner is stone street – lots of restaurants to choose from

Other must does are China town and little Italy – they both kind of merge into one but Mulberry street is there and has lots of mural art work on buildings

The Hudson yard has just opened, we went up it as its free but you need to get tickets first. – the higline also goes past here

Sephora stores are everywhere and the face masks are good value but its more expensive than I thought it was going to be, but if you do buy something sign up to be a member and then you get a free gift – I got some drunk elephant skin care .

The area that was reasonable prices for food we found was Hells kitchen – not far from times square – there a dive bar called Ruddys bar – it has a giant pig outside and its like $3 a beer and you get a free hotdog!

Refinery rooftop bar and spyglass rooftop bar are on the same street and offer great views of the empire state building – and were not overly expensive. A friend recommend 230 rooftop bar but the door guy was so rude we we didn’t bother going there.

Apparently in the summer pier 17 has lots going on with bars and food and entertainment

Look out for happy hour everywhere normally 4-7pm and sit at the bar as its cheaper.

We didn’t go an see a show, tickets are expensive but you can que for ‘rush tickets’ and/or do a lotto for them.

We were out of the hotel from 8-10pm each day and on the last day ordered a pizza to be delivered!

Hope this is of some help

user1519475227 · 08/07/2019 19:01

Oh and trying to find a loo is a nightmare!

FaithInfinity · 08/07/2019 19:04

I was hugely disappointed with the shopping! Everyone had said it was amazing but...meh! I’d saved up as well. I ended up buying stuff I could only get there - Tiffany necklace from Tiffany (Okay you can get here but they’re more money and they’re not from Tiffany NY), Levi’s from the Levi’s store and a Hard Rock Cafe NY t-shirt.

Have you considered air b&b? My friend stayed in an apartment and said it was a really positive experience and felt like touristy than a hotel.

New York is...so very busy. Like London x100. And so noisy, it never stops being noisy, traffic, sirens and horns through the night! But it’s fun. There’s loads to see and do. Pack your walking shoes, you’ll go miles!

FaithInfinity · 08/07/2019 19:04

Ooh walk across the Brooklyn Bridge too.

Wildernesstips · 08/07/2019 19:14

Just to add my favourite bits were Central Park (spent all day there) and the Highline dropping down to Chelsea Market.

We hardly used the subway, just walked...a lot!! Loved it!

LittleScottish · 08/07/2019 19:15

Wow! Exactly the sort of first-hand info I was hoping for! I feel like I can now plan the trip of a lifetime! Although I'm obviously going to need to book a three week stay! Grin xx

I’m going to study this to the nth degree, thanks for posting OP!

We’re staying at the Knickerbocker for 3 nights in January, no kids though. Cannot waaaaait!

Is there much north of Central Park? I always imagine it to be just residential.

cannycat20 · 08/07/2019 19:28

It's a few years ago now since I visited but I loved New York - it's like being inside a film set just about everywhere! We actually saw them filming while we were there - though not as exciting as it sounds.

Great advice on here about Top of the Rock, Brooklyn Bridge, Empire State, Rockefeller (completely agree with the Top of the Rock comment - you'll get pretty much as good a view as you would from the Empire State and it's nowhere near as crowded); travel, where to stay, and the fact that the shopping actually isn't all that and the weak pound means things will strike you as pretty expensive. Don't be fooled by the "food is so cheap" myth either; portions might be larger than we're used to here, but the prices aren't actually that different. And be prepared for the amount of sugar in just about everything....

Not sure if anyone's mentioned Broadway yet and the fact you can often get half price tickets on the day of the show if you go to the little booth near Times Square? Though that may be online now. Have a look at www.timeout.com/newyork/theater/cheap-broadway-tickets. And actually just walking round that area is pretty fun too.

I also loved Ellis Island, it was so moving; if memory serves me right I got the Staten Island ferry over. Which is free. And Grand Central Station is stunning - they do tours, I think, and the shopping mall underneath the concourse is great to have a look at. We could learn a lot from their design! Oh, and Central Park is lovely and a lot of the museums and galleries are literally world-class.

And though we didn't get to go to it that time, the (gay) friend who was my host did mention if you like musicals there's a bar in New York where many of the servers have great voices and belt out showstoppers - I think it might have been Marie's Crisis? The only reason I'm mentioning my friend is gay is that I have a feeling the bar might be listed under gay venues if you're researching? Obviously everyone's welcome though. ;) It's on my list for when I go back....

The 9/11 Memorial was also quite moving - I think they have a much larger building on there now, when I visited it was just a metal sphere with a commemorative flame in the middle of the buildings.

Do investigate the various day, 3-day etc passes you can get as well, I think some are only for non-US citizens.

And check out the weather forecast before you go - I was there in late March and the weeks before and afterwards were lovely warm spring weather with people jogging in Central Park in shorts, but when I was there it was so cold the street vendors outside the subway were selling earmuffs.

On the busy-ness thing, I get real panic attacks when there are too many people about, but actually as long as it wasn't rush hour, I found New York less claustrophobic than many southern English towns - the roads are pretty wide and when they built they built up, really, rather than out like in many places. It's definitely not as hemmed in as London, for instance. (With the rush hour caveat.)

And we haven't even mentioned areas like Greenwich Village yet...you'll have a great time.

Amiable · 08/07/2019 19:32

Little known, but you can eat in the delegates dining room at the UN. you need to book in advance and the dress code is strict (no jeans, no trainers etc) but the food is amazing and it's a great experience!

The NY pass is definitely worth it, if you are doing the classic touristy stuff. Really enjoyed the hop on hop off bus tours, the guides we had on 4 different buses were all very good. The audio tour of Grand Central was also excellent, could have spent longer there but had to go for our lunch at the UN!

Hotel NYMA is very good. It's on west 32nd, between Broadway and 5th Ave, we could walk pretty much anywhere. And it has a great roof top bar with amazing views of ESB, only 2 blocks away.

I loved NY and would go back in a heartbeat.

Amiable · 08/07/2019 19:33

Oh, and the tours of the Rockefeller Centre are very good too.

AnotherEmma · 08/07/2019 19:40

4 nights minimum - definitely not 3.
If it's a choice between 3/4 nights in a fancy hotel or 5 nights in a good hotel (or B&B/apartment) I would choose 5 nights every time.
There's so much amazing stuff to do in NYC that you won't spend much time at all in the hotel.
Last time I went to NYC it was for 5 days and I could have stayed at least another 2.

theluckiest · 08/07/2019 19:59

i my host did mention if you like musicals there's a bar in New York where many of the servers have great voices and belt out showstoppers

Yes!!! This is Ellen's Stardust Diner and it's an absolute must. You can book online...

crustycrab · 08/07/2019 20:20

Ellen's stardust diner doesn't take bookings. You have to join the line. Definitely choose 5 nights and a slightly cheaper hotel over 3 and luxury. You won't really be in the hotel.

Whatever you do ignore the air B&B suggestion. It is illegal for stays of less than 30 nights in NYC.

You also can't get the Staten Island ferry to Ellis Island. It just goes to Staten Island. But it is free.

The forums on trip advisor are amazing and will help you to plan.

StarlightLady · 08/07/2019 20:37

Grand Central Station Oyster Bar for a special night out. I don’t eat oysters but there are plenty of other choices.

FaithInfinity · 08/07/2019 20:59

Yes the 9/11 museum is huge now, it’s built down into the foundations and parking garage of the original buildings. I had wondered if they considered building on it again but there were lots of messages requesting they didn’t because families saw the location as the grave of their families members which made sense. There’s a lot of info in there - videos, audio messages and displays including a fire truck that got damaged, most of the crew worst lot..it’s worth planning to spend a full morning there and getting there early. We took advantage of the jet leg and were up and out to attractions when they opened each day!
