What would you use for tie dyeing?

I want to do this with the kids in the summer. Dylon is probably too toxic for little ones, isn’t it? Youngest is 4 so won’t be carful about it even if I section off the buckets of dye, I’d be worried.

Anyone done this successfully with little ones, and what did you use? Cool aid dyes? Natural dyes?

They have some great tie die kits in hobby craft with bottles for the die.

My children used Dyson to tie dye/dye when they were small and they’ve lived to be adults.

We did also make dyes from onions and hot shades of yellow and browns and even a reddish colour from red onions.

It’s a great thing to do with the children in the summer as it can all be done in the garden!

I know plenty of kids that have used dylon with no I'll affects one kid even wet the tip of his finger and dipped it in the dye and ate licked his finger ( he thought it was sherbet ) apart from a blue finger and tounge he was fine.

As PP said red onions work as does beetroot , maybe grass, petals .
Think back to all the stuff food that stains your clothes and you cannot get rid of it and it ruins them and use that Grin

Sharpies with surgical spirit might be more fun for little ones than tie dye as the effect is pretty instant & more colourful.

Sod it then, I’m using the dylon. Better colours and won’t fade. The eldest will be fine, it’s the crazy 4 year old that be the most likely to kick a bucket over Grin

Can we see pics of the results ?

Personally I prefer the bottles of dye (tulip are the Brand I usually buy) to the dylon ones. I find the colours are much stronger and don't fade in the wash. I also like the multi colour effects which are that bit easier with bottles of dye than soaking the cloth in a bucket.

You can make up the dylon dyes stronger to use in bottles, but you need to really make sure all the powder has dissolved otherwise you get a very spotty result.

The issue with Dylon is breathing in the powder before the dye is mixed, so that's easily taken care of beforehand. They are really good and last much better than they used to.
