Fifty years since the moon landings

It will be 50 years ago later this month since the first moon landing. I wasn’t born. I’ve always imagined though, what it must feel like to look up at the moon and know that there were people there. Do any MNers recall it? Was it scary or awe-inspiring? What did it feel like?

It seems so odd to me that this huge milestone took place half a century ago, and then abruptly stopped almost as suddenly as it had begun a few years later. And since then, loads of other exciting space stuff but nobody else has ever stood on something that wasn’t of our planet.

We got a television so we could watch it.

Redshoeblueshoe · 07/07/2019 22:57

I was a child at the time and it was amazing.
I feel so old knowing it's 50 years.
My parents used to drag me in the house to watch big news stories, even if I didn't understand it at the time.
I did this with my DC and they now do it with theirs

Maybe it's true that they were faked!

DramaAlpaca · 08/07/2019 00:25

I only vaguely remember it, I was 5 at the time. DH was 8 & remembers the excitement of it all very clearly.

Destroyed1 · 08/07/2019 00:59

^ this.

raspberryk · 08/07/2019 01:01

I think it didn't happen either!

SwedishEdith · 08/07/2019 01:18

I think it didn't happen either!

Oh, well, it mustn't have done then.

noblegiraffe · 08/07/2019 01:22

Literally the greatest achievement of humankind, to travel beyond the borders of our own planet in a spacecraft of our devising and come home safely.

Drives me mad that people shrug and say ‘bet we didn’t’. How much awe and wonder they are missing out on because they think that sodding flag is flapping.

I’ve watched Buzz Aldrin talk about it. Mind blowing how amazing those astronauts were.

sashh · 08/07/2019 01:24

What about Mir? Skylab? ISS?

I think it didn't happen either!

Then they put an awful lot of effort into faking it, TV signals from space that had to be routed via Australia, placing a mirror on the moon. Employed hundreds of engineers, mathematicians and technicians. Then there was the cooperation with the USSR so that their unmanned probe didn't crash into Apollo 11.

PeonyPink0 · 08/07/2019 01:31

I want to believe it but then I remember how crap computers and mobile phones were in 1999, how much they have come on in 20 years, and then think well how the hell did we do it with the technology available 50 years ago???

PaddyF0dder · 08/07/2019 01:37

I loathe people who deny they happened. I loathe them with every bit of my being. I loathe their idiotic inability to learn about the subject, and their glibly arrogant conclusion that it just didn’t happen.

I loathe how such people are anti-science, how they rob this achievement from the countless excellent people who made it happen. Achievements that far, far outweigh anything they have achieved in their little, conspiracy theory-polluted minds.

I loathe how they think their “beliefs” and “feelings” are held up to be equal to the facts of history.

Naturally we all deserve to be treated with the respect we deserve. So, with absolutely all the respect such people deserve, I humbly say “go fuck yourself”.

raspberryk · 08/07/2019 01:41

Lol maybe those people are driven mad by and loathe the believers, who can't think independently and believe everything they're told. Such is life.

Kallyderon · 08/07/2019 01:47

It's a hell of a lot of effort to go to though isn't it? Paying off all the hundreds of engineers, physicists, controllers, army and security officials, world leaders, other politicians, press officers, publicists etc who were involved and getting them to not let on that it was a hoax, not even to one person, not even on their deathbed, for fifty years? I mean, be easier to just go to the frigging moon, wouldn't it? 🤣

sashh · 08/07/2019 01:49

The tech has got faster, smaller and cheaper but in the end it's all binary and that was available then.

They spent years with humans working out the maths before they launched.

Kallyderon · 08/07/2019 01:51

PeonyPink0 if you read any accounts by any of the astronauts from that time it really is incredible what they did with the technology available. Armstrong himself had more than one near miss and they had to skilfully work with very limited tech, both USA and the Russians. They were totally dicing with death. Like the early pilots but higher up.

Bezalelle · 08/07/2019 07:10

That's a lot of loathing, @PaddyF0dder!

Just take a look at all the false flags America has perpetrated (eg Operation Northwoods) and consider the context of the Cold War.

Try not to view things so emotionally.

MrsWilkinsonAthome · 08/07/2019 07:13

My mother told me that she and my father who were really rather young snuck off for very rare bit of “alone time” whilst the coast was clear and everyone was watching the moon landings. I was the result 😂😂

So the moon landings have a rather special place in my heart. :)

sycamore54321 · 08/07/2019 07:17

What about Mir? Skylab? ISS?

All of those are anazing but they were all man made, here in earth. That’s why I said “of this planet”. The Moon landings were utterly unique in this regard.

I genuinely wasn’t expecting to see people debate the veracity of the landings. Do those posters really believe that or re you just referencing the conspiracy theories without believing that yourself? I agree with the passionate defence of science laid out above.

Love the conception story!

BullBullBull · 08/07/2019 07:20

People who think this was faked are stupid.

PaddyF0dder · 08/07/2019 07:23

@Bezalelle

So it’s a false flag done to win the Cold War.

Well done to all the brave souls who have exposed this false flag. Except the USSR, who didn’t question it.

But sure, sure. Well done, you’ve cracked it. Have a cookie.

GoFiguire · 08/07/2019 07:27

I loathe you back PaddyFodder

HTH

PaddyF0dder · 08/07/2019 07:28

Conspiracy theories like “the moon landings were faked” are akin to a virus in the minds of the gullible and the unintelligent. And, remarkably, the virus convinced the believers that they are smart for believing in it.

But the moon landing conspiracy theory is particularly galling because it robs countless people of their remarkable achievements in ACTUALLY LANDING PEOPLE ON THE MOON. There are huge mountains of evidence to prove it happened. Vast amounts of testimony and oral history explaining precisely how each step was achieved.

Quite frankly it takes an incredible amount of frankly deluded mental gymnastics to arrive at the conspiracy theory. It’s a pernicious, toxic and absolutely moronic thing to believe.

idlevice · 08/07/2019 07:31

Pedantry notice: The ISS etc don't have enough gravity to allow a person to actually stand on them. That is all.

GoFiguire · 08/07/2019 07:38

Calm down, paddy calm down....

Do some yoga and get out more. You sound like you’re going to have a heart atrack.

Shhhh sssshhhhhhhhhhh, calm down.........

Mouldiwarp1 · 08/07/2019 07:49

Wow! I had no idea so many people thought it didn’t happen. Yes, I do remember it. I was 8 and we were on holiday abroad - there was a TV in the hotel lounge and everyone gathered to watch it. It was a really big deal at the time and a natural progression from the space flights that went before - I’m amazed people actually think it was made up. Weird.
