Would you get a Smart tv next time?

Theres nothing really wrong with my telly. Except its 32” and my eyes arent what they were🙂 I dont want it in my bedroom so I will probably get it taken away. I have an apple tv with it. So, will this suffice with a new tv or should I just buy a smart tv? Then there will be two items to get rid of. The price seems to be the same but is the quality as good?

Thats how i feel about my Sony. Theres nothing wrong with it except its size.

Nope. Smart technology outdates far quicker than I like to replace TVs. Bought a very expensive Sony smart tv a few years ago but the smart functions are now unreliable. We use an amazon stick on it now. TV in itself is still fine.

GiantKitten · 07/07/2019 23:02

EachandEveryone
Im interested in a Sony as thats what Ive got now however the new ones seem to come with really fragile “legs”. Mine has a really supportive stand attacehed to it. Im worried about the cats knocking a new one over.

The legs are the best bit about my new one! The old one had a solid square base. Our old Sky box was wired & lived on a shelf in the cupboard underneath & there was a big mess of wires & other bits & pieces all stacked up behind the old square base.

We had to get a new Sky Q box because the old one blew up - it's wireless (well, apart from mains), very slim & small, & tucks neatly between the fragile-looking feet (they're quite sturdy really & my cats havne't knocked the telly over yet)

So don't let that put you off Smile

avalanching · 07/07/2019 23:03

And yet to see a smart tv that functions as easily as an amazon stick or similar. Clunky as someone else said. Our bedroom tv one is a pain in the arse, again, not cheap, going to buy another amazon stick for it!

avalanching · 07/07/2019 23:04

AND they can't get the Disney life app. Annoying.

StumpyinSomerset · 07/07/2019 23:06

No. I won't replace mine when it dies.. Mine is I think about 32",plenty big enough. I only use it for the odd programme.

NC4Now · 07/07/2019 23:09

I upgraded my 32” not smart TV to a 40” smart TV at Christmas. I’m really pleased with it. Mine’s a Samsung as that’s what my old one was. The 40” is the perfect size for the space I have and is big enough for our room without dominating it.

GiantKitten · 07/07/2019 23:11

We only use the normal Sky channels via the Sky Q box.

Netflix, amazon prime, iplayer & all the other catch-up stuff is accessed via the smart TV menu. It's generally fairly slick & not clunky - any issues are mostly down to our router being upstairs the other side of the house. (We have a booster upstairs the same side of the house but it does drop out a bit sometimes)

madderthenaboxofffrogs · 08/07/2019 09:41

I don't see what benefit you'll get from a smart tv if you have Sky Q and Apple TV already?

I guess it depends on what package u have from sky? With Sky you have all catch up services, box sets, movies can subscribe to Netflix via Sky. Don't know about Apple TV but imagine you can access a lot via that?

I have sky and a smart tv and the only thing I use the smart tv for is you tube.

But if u ever get rid off Sky a smart tv will be handy!

ExpletiveDelighted · 08/07/2019 09:50

Can you get non-smart TVs now? Like a pp we have got a 10+ year old non-smart Panasonic which is still a really good TV, we have Sky Q and an XboxOne linked to it and we can easily watch anything we want. Our other telly is a smaller Sony Smart TV about 6 years old and the smart features are rubbish, we don't use them at all and never really have done. We use it with a Sky q mini and a blu-ray player,

sleepingbelvi · 08/07/2019 10:01

Just don't get a Samsung/

Why not?

Why do people post comments like this without any reasoning?

OP I have a smart TV (happens to be a Samsung). I never use the smart part though as we have virgin media so access things through that. When we were replacing our TV the 55" Samsung was the best option for us, so we bought it.

RingtheBells · 08/07/2019 10:21

If you have Sky Q most will be on that. We only have the old Sky+ HD so no Netflix on that. DH won’t upgrade to Q as he will lose all his old recordings on his planner upstairs so do use the smart tv for Netflix

RingtheBells · 08/07/2019 10:23

We also have a 10 year old 32 inch Panasonic which has been really good and upstairs now for DHs sports programmes

EachandEveryone · 08/07/2019 12:47

Ive been persuaded by sky to convert to Sky Q because they say the booster will help with the poor signal —in nextdoors flat— its cheaper than the sky plus box i have

Sounds as if we should all be looking for 10-yr-old Panasonics instead of new Smarts (of any make!) Grin

GiantKitten · 08/07/2019 13:03

Just to illustrate how reflective the screen is on ours - you can see the pattern on the curtains & the check (pale grey & white) of the chair cover Hmm

Why do They design stuff like this? Do They only ever watch in a totally dark room?

Would you get a Smart tv next time?
drsausage · 08/07/2019 13:39

I love our smart TV - in fact we bought one and found it so much easier to use we bought two more.

But we don't watch TV through cable or Sky or anything like that, just through online services available through the TV.

We've thrown away all our Firesticks, AppleTVs etc.

Kallyderon · 08/07/2019 16:01

We don't have sky/virgin either - we've got a youview box we got for sixty quid that means we can pause/rewind/record all the Freeview channels and a few more on there, plus it has all the catch-ups and netflix, then I have my plugin for other streaming plus ofc we can do catch-ups through that as well but we've kept the youview just for the pause/rewind/record facility. I'm surprised that so many people still have cable really - I thought it was dying out. Certainly none of the young people I know have virgin etc.

Chovihano · 08/07/2019 16:04

No, I see smart devices as a way of BB getting to us.
It's amazing the difference it makes to protecting your data.

ExpletiveDelighted · 08/07/2019 16:07

Sounds as if we should all be looking for 10-yr-old Panasonics instead of new Smarts (of any make!) - ours is definitely not for sale!

We don't have Netflix but have had Sky for many years (originally for sport). I think we are very much in a minority not having Netflix. We've never been able to get cable.

EachandEveryone · 08/07/2019 18:53

None of the new ones seem to get that good reviews. Which? Dont seem to rate 42” tvs at all, they say the big manufacturers arent interested in making that size as everyone wants bigger.

OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 08/07/2019 19:03

We have two smart TVs and they are now very good indeed. You can do everything on them, the one in the play room is older and the bigger new living room one is a whole different ballgame. It has voice control, I simply hold down the button, talk to it, and it finds what I want, be in online ie YouTube videos, films, songs, or even the weather.

I can also talk to my sky q box , but don't find it as intuitive or as extensive as my tv. Also often sky can go down in bad weather and my tv still works. I'm not reliant on sky signal.

It really depends what you want. But I'd personally only buy a smart tv now unless I had a financial constraint

As for size. You need to google. There is a formula. Viewing distance and it tells you the best size of tv.

RingtheBells · 08/07/2019 19:27

People must all have huge houses for these large TVs, we can only fit a maximum of about 43” next to the chimney breast as the gap is hardly any bigger, our only alternative is above the fireplace where we could probably get a 60” in but we would have to look up at it and would only be about 8-9 feet away, I feel I would get a cricked neck. Ours can’t be the only smallish front room out there as we live in an average sized 3 bed house

EachandEveryone · 08/07/2019 19:50

Ive followed the guide. 88” still means I need a 42” and there arent that many to choose from Which? Only seem to rate LG’s which ive never used before.

There are quite a few at John Lewis with reviews and they give a five year guarantee, you can filter for 39 - 46 inch size
