Has anyone had a dental crown?

How Long have you had it and how do you know when it needs replacing?
I think mine needs looking at. Have had it 6 years, brush and floss regularly (okay maybe not flossing as regularly but flossing was what snapped my original tooth so I’m wary!) but on Friday i noticed some blood coming from the crowned tooth and I think it wobbles slightly.
Can it need replacing already? In my head they lasted a good 10 years but from a quick google they may need replacing after 5!
I’ll call my dentist tomorrow and see when they can fit me in. I’ve got a wedding to go to in a couple of weeks and I’m scared it’s going to just fall out and leave me with a gap Shock
I do go to the dentist every 6 months as I have shit teeth and always need something doing inbetween appointments. Dp and the dc only go once a year Sad

I have a 30 year old crown. It came out once (when flossing), but the dentist glued it back in and it was fine. It is very worn on the top and looks like a tooth with a filling. Will pssibly need replacing in the next 5 years, but I've had my money's worth I think.
The blood is more likely to be from your gum tbh. Do you see a hygienist regularly?

I had a crown and a cap in 1999. The crown fell out in 2016 and had to be replaced, the cap is still in place. There was no warning the crown was loose, it just came out while I was eating pizza! Rubbish timing, I was away and it was the first night so I had to go all week with a front tooth missing!

Definitely get it checked, might just be inflammation around the gums.

I have a couple of crowns which are definitely older than 10 years. The only one I have had to replace was the one I pulled out when eating dried mango. Unfortunately I then swallowed it!

I got one in 1997 I think and it is still going strong.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 07/07/2019 20:51

I got my crowns (several) in the early 1990ties.
Had a check up im May - still fine.

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 07/07/2019 20:58

I got one in 2003 that is still going strong. 5 years is shit. Is something stuck under it? Sometimes mine bleeds and aches but is usually resolved with a particularly vicious flossing. Is it a post and crown or just a normal one?

CakeNinja · 07/07/2019 21:42

I think from memory it’s a post and crown, it sounds familiar anyway... it was done in 2 sessions I remember that much.
I don’t see a hygienist, just my dentist every 6 months. He doesn’t tell me to see a hygienist and he does a scale and polish (whatever that is!).
I’m making an appointment tomorrow for as soon as he can fit me in. I’m just a bit scared because I think I can feel it wobble Confused

I've got two that are 33 years old and still fine. There is a small gap where my gums have receded slightly, but my dentist isn't concerned about it - he tells me he can replace them if I want to for cosmetic reasons but they are structurally sound.

33 years and still going strong. Do you smoke OP?

CakeNinja · 07/07/2019 21:58

Haven’t smoked for nearly 3 years.

I'd get an appointment with the hygienist to have your gums checked.

CakeNinja · 07/07/2019 22:42

I’ll speak to the receptionist tomorrow and ask where to go for a hygienist.
I don’t think there’s one at my dentists place otherwise surely he’d have sent me there before.

While regular hygienist appointments are good, not all practises have a separate hygienist. Our dentist does the scrape and polish treatment in person.

Re your question, I had my front six teeth crowned in 1985. They were guaranteed of ten years. Twice annual scrape and polish and check up ever since.

Thirty five years old and still going strong.

I'd get yours checked out.

PulpHorn · 07/07/2019 22:53

Post crowns are quite rubbish. I'm a dentist and I tell patients to expect them to last for around 5 years. It might be able to be recemented in but I'd start saving for an implant now

PulpHorn · 07/07/2019 23:01

Don't worry about the wedding though they'll be able to do something temporary even in the worst case scenario!

CakeNinja · 07/07/2019 23:14

I’d happily pay for an implant if it lasts longer than 6 years!
I don’t really understand what a post crown is as opposed to a crown. Does the post bit get put in first and then the crown sits over the top?
It’s not at the front, it’s the second molar. I have another weak second molar on the opposite side Confused I wonder if I perhaps just need all my teeth ripping out and a whole mouth of implants, they’ve already cost me so much money over the years and they’re still shit Sad

A regular crown sits on a stump of tooth, normally the tooth has broken down and is mainly filling so it's filed down slightly to make room. A post crown is done when there's not enough tissue to support a crown so posts go down into the roots supporting a core on top and then the crown sits down over that with the edges lower to hold it all in place. Normal crowns I'd expect to last 15-20 years on average. We see lots of problems of roots splitting under the forces of normal eating/chewing/grinding with post crowns so they are quite unpredictable especially in back teeth. I would say worth doing as a last chance saloon just to prolong the life of a tooth depending on the circumstances. Implants have a 98% success rate for around 20 years but not normally done for second molars. Hope you get on ok today!

CakeNinja · 08/07/2019 14:22

I can’t get in until Thursday so I’ll have to wait a little longer to find out my toothy fate.
I’m guessing It may well we’ll have come to the end of its life.
Will discuss implants. How long do these take to take moulds and fit etc, does anyone know? I’d like 2 really, one for each of the second molars.
How come they are not normally made for those teeth?

OP posts:
CakeNinja · 08/07/2019 14:23

I will add that the cost is irrelevant, I want my teeth not to be shit!!

romany4 · 08/07/2019 16:02

Mine only lasted 2 years. I have no idea why when I brushed and flossed every day.
Maybe I was just unlucky

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 08/07/2019 20:30

One of mine is a post and crown and is showing no sign of wear at 16 years. IT may just need to be cemented back in, it's more common for the cement to fail than the crown.
