Has anyone got a garden pizza oven?

I really want one. I have a small ish garden but could get one and afford it. I have a big birthday coming up as an excuse.

Do they work? Are they just a white elephant?

I'm looking a Casa Wood fried pizza oven at the moment because it's not to big and is portable like a big barbecue.
But I'm sure there are others. Suggestions welcome.

I've found one on Amazon for half the price of the casa one I was looking at!

Our neighbour has one. I hate them. They want pizza, I have to go indoors and shut up the house otherwise it's full of smoke. Just bake in the oven ffs

MsRinky · 07/07/2019 11:03

I have a Roccbox, it's great. It works on wood or gas, but I don't bother with the wood. Pizzas are perfectly done in 90 seconds.

We have a clay one one. Takes days to heat it up so it doesn't crack. We have never used it - was there when we moved in

sackrifice · 07/07/2019 11:04

I used to build them, and had one in my garden.

In my opinion, and remember I used ones that were build using cob not bricks, they take a huge amount of wood to get to temperature, each pizza cooks in less than a minute and the main failure is the smoke in your eyes if not constructed right, and the ability for them to cool down whilst you are prepping the actual pizzas. So you need one person prepping the oven and one person prepping the food.

And also make use of the residual heat by bunging in a pre-kneaded loaf, close the door and leave it for an hour.

onsen · 07/07/2019 11:09

We've got one, bought a kit online and we do use it (and it doesn't smoke, except a bit at the start when you're heating it up and that's no worse than a barbecue).

Ours is insulated and so we roast vegetables while it is heating up, and then often use the residual heat to slow cook meat which is almost better than the pizzas.

You do need to use kiln dried wood in it, otherwise you don't get the right temperature, but ours goes up to 550 degrees when it's working right.

LikeSilentRaindrops · 07/07/2019 11:10

Yes, there was one in the house we bought. We’ve tried using it twice and it hasn’t felt worth it yet! Good pizza, but takes loads of time and wood to get it ready - too much faff for us.

SilverySurfer · 07/07/2019 14:00

Divide its cost by the number of pizzas you realistically think you will cook in it, then order a takeaway.

sackrifice · 07/07/2019 14:02

And don't forget the cost of the wood to fire it up!

funnyfuckers · 07/07/2019 14:09

We have a clay one. It takes a good hour 30 to warm up but cooks pizzas in minutes and they are nice. Doesn't smoke at all. Cooks other stuff in it too we have one whenever the sun is out. My H wanted one for years so he's in charge of starting it, cleaning it and making the dough for the bases

HighlandWorrier · 07/07/2019 14:09

Friends have one and while I admit the pizzas are great it seems rather frivolous. As a pp said would you really spend as much on pizza as the cost of the pizza oven. Can't remember the exact cost but when they told us we were like Shock

glitterbiscuits · 07/07/2019 16:12

I'm not going to think about the cost per pizza. I just want good results.

There are no take away pizza places near me. I like to cook. I'm so tempted!

We have an Uuni, which is a little metal box that burns wood pellets. It takes 15 minutes to heat up and cooks a pizza perfectly in 30 seconds. It's brilliant! It can do veg and steaks and things as well - anything that can cope with a very quick blast of HOT.

Oberonunder · 07/07/2019 16:21

My friend has one. I think it is a clay one. He uses it every week, whatever the weather, and it gives him lots of joy. He's started trying to cook other things in it now too. It doesn't seem massively smokey either.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 07/07/2019 16:21

@UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername I really want an Uuni, if we get a bonus this year I am definitely indulging!

BurnedToast · 07/07/2019 16:23

We have a wood one. It looks like a barbecue with a metal lid and chimney. It's OK, but normally ends in a row. Ours only fits one pizza at a time. DH has a thing about not making the pizzas in advance, so there ends us being an argument about me not having the next pizza ready in time. The trick is to buy the ready made dough, prep pizza base and put toppings in bowls. Whilst one pizza is in, remove prepped pizza base with sauce and cheese from fridge and add ready prepped toppings. Shove in oven. Repeat with next one. They're OK, but I wouldn't want to be faffing about with it at a party for any more than a few people. Might work if you have space for more than one. I'd rather get a takeaway, but I hate cooking.

mbosnz · 07/07/2019 16:23

Our friends have one and it's fabulous. And they've done hundreds, if not thousands of pizzas in theirs!

We have a pizza stone for the BBQ and love it.

Blue5238 · 07/07/2019 16:25

I bought an ooni koda (gas only) 10 days ago. I'm still practicing but definitely had some good pizza. Given there are 5 people in this house that love pizza I think we will soon get our moneys worth.
It is portable and we will be taking it on holiday too
I seldom cook pizza in a normal oven as it just doesn't get hot enough to make good pizza.

Maidsamilking · 07/07/2019 16:26

We have! Had home made and cooked pizzas today. Takes a bit of skill to get the pizzas off the spare and into the oven but they are gorgeous and totally worth it.

Wellhellothere101 · 07/07/2019 16:27

We’ve got an Ooni gas powered one. I bought it a few weeks ago for my DH’s birthday as I was struggling for ideas. It’s a gorgeous day here so we’re going to use it tonight for the first time. I’ve spent some time making the pizza dough, invited the in laws round and we’ll all make our own pizza. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
I’m hoping it makes a nice change from a bbq as I’m getting fed up with blackened burgers 😂

runningme · 07/07/2019 16:29

I’ve got an Uuni. It’s proper portable. Lovely pizzas from it. I haven’t tried doing anything else in it yet. There’s loads on YouTube showing how quick it is to get up to heat and the different food you can use it for.

ArtistOfTheFloatingWorld · 07/07/2019 19:14

I also have an uuni/ooni. I love it.

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/07/2019 20:25

I’d get one if I could afford it, the authenticity would sell it for me.

Do you use 00 flour to make your bases?.

Waitingaround · 07/07/2019 21:31

We have a uuni- it’s brilliant

DMCWelshcakes · 07/07/2019 21:46

We have one. I bought it for DH as a present because he's Italian and loves to cook. We don't find it too much of a faff but we use a log burner for heating all winter so our faff standards might be different to other people's. I got it in Aldi and it's been brilliant. DH has also done roasts in it as well as vegetables and pizzas. It's not too big & we can move it around the garden as it's metal not clay.
