Getting Rid of Landline

We hardly use our landline these days as we both have mobile contracts with lots of minutes. Very few people ring in on it and those who do could easily contact us via our mobiles. We don't need a landline for our internet so are thinking of getting rid of it. Someone mentioned to me that you need a landline to put on forms for applying for loans and would be less likely to be approved if you didn't have one. Is this still the case with so many people opting for mobiles only these days? Anyone have any experience of this?

We rarely use our landline these days, but will keep it for the following reasons:

  1. OH is self-employed, and having a landline and a mobile projects a more professional image
  2. Mobile reception in our house isn’t great
  3. We get our broadband through the landline
  4. We have elderly relatives that use our landline number as a the default phone number
  5. I don’t carry my mobile around with me all the time and I can hear the landline phone wherever I am in the house
  6. The phone still works in a power cut
  7. At busy times, like New Year, when all the mobile networks are jammed, the landline still works
  8. The sound quality is better and much clearer

Got rid of ours around 5 or 6 years ago when we realised the only calls we received were spam. Have never missed it. I’m sure we’ve had a few minor credit checks for credit cards and mobile contracts without issues.

We technically have a phone number, but the actual phone is not plugged in favour of a plug in air freshener.
I have no idea what our phone number is.
I don't plan on ever giving it to any one worth speaking to.

We have a landline for the broadband but no idea what the actual phone number is, we haven't ever had a phone plugged into it in 5 years.

I've not used the landline in 15+ years and have had no problems with mortgages and loans. There is a landline for broadband but no phone plugged in

autumngold6 · 07/07/2019 12:32

Pikapikachu, did you give your landline number on the mortgage and loan applications or just leave that section on the form blank as you don't have the phone plugged in?

We moved house a few years ago got the landline my parents and my aunt have the number (and bloodyscammers) everybody else has our mobile numbers Drs/bank etc etc nobody needs a landline these days, my Dd doesn't have a phone plugged in in her house

TapasForTwo · 07/07/2019 12:48

"nobody needs a landline these days,"

Incorrect. Some of us do because mobile phone signals are shit. My late MIL's house in the arse end of nowhere in Northumberland is awful for mobile phone use regardless of which service provider you use.

Not everyone lives in areas with strong signals.

Barring shit mobile signals Grin

Got rid of mine years ago and haven't missed it. However, the Consultant at my cancer clinic raised his eyebrows and asked me if I was a criminal when he queried the lack of a landline. I hadn't seen Line of Duty then, so didn't know what he meant but the nurse turned red and looked at the floor so I gathered it was an indicator of something I'd better find out about.

I've got a landline for broadband only. No idea what the number is. I've not had a phone plugged in for about 12 years. I've never put the landline number on any forms - credit cards, mortgage, bank accounts etc. Just leave it blank and give your mobile number.

autumngold6 · 07/07/2019 15:03

Karl and Kerning, that's good to know. I think we'll be getting rid of the landline.
