Audiobook series recommendation

Can anyone give me a new series to go for, preferably with massive tomes to it so they last a while .
I like sci-fi like
Brian McClellan
Jim Butcher

Really loved:
the big Follett series like War of the Worlds. Bernard Cornwell
Conn Iggulden

Giles Kristian was ok but not as good as above

Enjoyed Jason Matthews

Just finished the Martin Walker series about Bruno

Enjoy fiction too, but length is a priority if I'm being honest.

Thanks.

Edward Rutherford books are in a similar vein to Ken Follet but I don't know what they are like on audio - only just started with audio and working way through Follet at the moment. For some of them kindle plus audio is cheaper than audio on its own.

Game of Thrones books are pretty tome like and IMO much better than the tv series (that I haven't watched Grin.

We are Legion (We are Bob) was amazing to listen to. It's one of those books that works better as an audiobook. I bought the next two in the trilogy immediately after listening to the first one.

I've also enjoyed Lock In by John Scalzi, you can buy it with either a male or a female narrator which is interesting as the protagonist has a gender neutral name and his/her sex is never mentioned. I went for Will Wheaton as the narrator, but I wondered afterwards if it would have been a slightly different book with the female narrator.

I recently listened to The Worldship Humility by RR Haywood. I quite liked it, but it would definitely have been better to read as there were parts of it that moved very slowly. Also the science was a bit dodgy, for instance they make reference to artificial gravity but no indication of how that actually works, anyway the space ship is constantly accelerating (mentioned several times), so why would they even need artificial gravity?

I have Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky lined up, but haven't listened to it yet.

If you like thrillers then Andrew Mayne is a good listen. I enjoyed The Naturalist, which is the first of a trilogy.

Also Matthew Reilly writes massive thrillers, I've read his books but a lot of them are available on audio. The Great Zoo of China is good one.

Thank you all so much. I'm trying Neal Stephenson Quicksilver but will put all these on my wishlist.

I'm a farmer and have horses so spend a ton of time with non speaking friends and they all seem to enjoy the audiobooks!

That's interesting, I would have assumed that horses would prefer historical romance over sci-fi. You live and learn. Grin

Wallywobbles · 06/07/2019 06:06

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar not sure they really enjoyed the zombie book yesterday.

Stuart Macbride books are very good

Wallywobbles · 06/07/2019 12:03

Wishlist is brimming and I know what I'll be requesting audible credits for Christmas.

Well, you can understand why horses wouldn’t enjoy a zombie story. It never works out well for the horse, does it? They’re almost always abandoned as a distraction so that a human can make a getaway while the zombies munch the horse.

I love the Falco series. Thrillers set in ancient Rome (more like comedy really)

tryingtobebetterallthetime · 08/07/2019 00:58

Citizens of London by Lynn Olsen.

I found this gripping. It focuses on several Americans in London during WW I, and their work regarding getting the US to help Britain. Learned lots.

I am Canadian, not American. This book gave me quite a bit of insight into the war and the leadership of the UK and US.

Not a recommendation for books but if you download an app called overdrive you can borrow ebooks and audio books .

Wallywobbles · 08/07/2019 09:40

Thanks for the tip. I've downloaded the Libby my OverDrive app as it has better reviews. Couldn't work out from the description what the difference was.

Sadly overdrive requires a library card and I'm in france and there's no link up to libraries here.
