Any optometrists around? Cheeky request!

I've just been given a prescription for glasses just for reading/close work but unsure whether to just buy cheapy reading glasses or invest in prescription pair. The issue is that I'll be constantly taking them on and off so will need several pairs, so will be expensive to get prescription ones! I will post a pic of the prescription. Thanks in advance!

If they fit your prescription you can buy a cheap pair. Ophthalmic nurse here.

My colleague used to buy them in the pound shop!

Hi hotchocolate thanks for the very quick response! Please can you explain what you mean? I know I can get reading glasses off the shelf for the Near-ADD bit at 1.0 (same both eyes luckily), but do I need to worry about the numbers in the first three columns?

You may need to possibly get two pairs, looking at the prescription. For near and far. I’d say it’s just a case of trying a few on and seeing what works. Remember there are online optometrists that can make up
Specs fairly cheaply. Cheaper than the high street anyway.

@HotChocolateLover how important is PD measurements when buying a prescription pair?

Nearlyadoctor · 05/07/2019 10:47

The first 3 numbers relate to a distance prescription, it’s only the +1.00 which is relevant for reading. I’m assuming with such a small prescription you’re not having distance glasses?
Off the peg readers are absolutely fine, take your phone or a book and try some, holding in the natural position you would to read. I would try +1.00 and +1.50 and see which is the most comfortable.

HotChocolateLover · 05/07/2019 10:52

It’s pretty important because it’s the distance between the pupils and will determine where you look through the lens of your glasses IYSWIM. If you have a lazy eye then you may run into problems if you buy off the shelf so buying a from a proper optometrist will probably be the way to go as they can make it up for you. HTH.

Nearlyadoctor · 05/07/2019 10:59

@Pinkspring - hotchocolatelover is quite correct regarding PD distance being important but again this is mainly relevant in distance/bifocal/varifocal glasses.

PinkSpring · 05/07/2019 11:05

Thanks, mine are distance. I ordered them form a place that measures PD using an app and finally managed to get it to work earlier but before that they were saying I could just choose the standard PD

underneaththeash · 05/07/2019 11:20

A +1.50 will be fine for most things as a spare, but you’ve got an cyl in your left eye that won’t be corrected so i’d get a pair made up as well. The off the shelf glasses don’t take into account the distance between your eyes either.

BuggaLugga · 05/07/2019 11:52

Thanks guys all really helpful. I think I'll get one or two prescription pairs made up, then buy a couple of cheapy readers for my handbag/travel, and then I can compare as well.

What's a cyl underneath?

OP posts:
Nearlyadoctor · 05/07/2019 12:15

It’s a minimal cyl ( slight astigmatism meaning the eye is not totally spherical slightly rugby ball shaped). In your prescription it’s negligible so I really wouldn’t bother paying for prescription glasses , it will actually be giving you a better depth of perception than if your eyes were totally spherical. I have lots of patients who have a far larger cyl and they manage with just off the peg readers.
The Pp mentioned that they don’t take into account the distance between your eyes again as I mentioned earlier that’s irrelevant for readers.

Nearlyadoctor · 05/07/2019 12:18

The last line refers to readers for someone with your prescription op, not everyone in general.
