Blocked bath drain 🛀

FredaFox · 04/07/2019 20:27

Inspired by the tips on the blocked toilet thread I wondered what advice people have for a slow draining bath.
I have long hair which I'm always pulling out the plug and sometimes but those sink unblock liquids but it doesn't stay clear for long, sometimes in the shower I get standing water ( very slow draining)
What do you long haired ladies use in the bath?!

Don’t bother with the hair remover rip down the plug hole it doesn’t work!

Use one of those hair catchers.

Or buy a proper unblocker.

My bath is slow draining too. It’s starting smelling too. Something bad is going on down there.

I bought a sink unblocked once that came with a long thin plastic wand that you poked down the drain. It had barbs on it and the amount of hit it pulled up with it was unbelievable. I can’t remember the brand, but if you can find one it’s well worth a try.

That looks strong stuff @soola I've only bought the cheap £1 stuff before which works for a week but then it's back to normal. Thanks

You need a drain snake: Drain Weasel Drain & Plughole Cleaning Brush www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00E1LAZZY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_EuLhDbZR49DP4

KeepHimJolene · 04/07/2019 20:38

At the weekend Take off the side of the bath find the U bend for the plug hole and unscrew it. Clean it completely of all the hair soap scum then reassemble.

ElspethFlashman · 04/07/2019 20:40

Drain snake.

Hugely satisfying. And magical results. As I have long hair, I always have one in the house.

Absolutely disgusting though, wear gloves!

theconstantinoplegardener · 04/07/2019 20:40

A plunger is excellent for this! Fill the bath with a couple of inches of hot water, block the overflow with an old sock or cover tightly with your hand, pull the plug out and immediately place the plunger over the plug hole.

Then push the handle of the plunger up and down vigorously (but gently). Lots of gunk will start swirling around in the water and there will be a terrible smell. Every 30 seconds or so, lift the plunger to see if the bathwater is draining well or not (sometimes there is a gurgle sound yo tell you the blockage has shifted).

Once satisfactory drainage has been achieved, you can stop plunging and clean the bath!

It's very satisfying.

They sell a drain snake type thing in Poundland so that's worth a try(and cheap)

FredaFox · 04/07/2019 20:44

ooh drain snake looks exciting and I'll invest in a plunger- thanks everyone😊

Mr Muscle drain unblocker liquid is excellent. It works for at least 6-12 months for me

PurpleCrazyHorse · 04/07/2019 20:47

We have a sink rod (like a drain rod but tiny), it might actually be for toilets. Honestly it pulled so much hair out of our bath drain it nearly got stuck Shock but it did the trick and obviously it got it all our rather than just dissolving some of it.

mineofuselessinformation · 04/07/2019 20:47

Go down the holes with a pair of tweezers and have a fish around. You will probably be horrified at the long snake of hair that you eventually get out (put a wad of toilet paper underneath it to stop it dripping all over the floor).
If that doesn't improve things drastically, use a drain unblocker like mr muscle which 'digests' the hair and leave it overnight.

mineofuselessinformation · 04/07/2019 20:48

P.S. Wash the tweezers afterwards, obviously!

Lucafritz · 04/07/2019 20:49

Unscrew the screw in the middle of the plughole and pull the plughole out all the hair and gunk should be attached to the underside of it and come out as one piece. If not drain snake it afterwards to get the remainders

I bought a cheap snake thing, it's was a long covered wire with Velcro on the end. It pulled out all the hair a treat. The bought a better cover for the plug hole.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 04/07/2019 21:26

You need to buy a decent hair catcher so that once you’ve cleared it it doesn’t happen again. Someone on here recommended an OXO Good Grips shower stall drain protector to me. Very cheap and VERY effective. Since I bought it 6 years ago we’ve never again had to unblock the bath.

Just beware, if you decide to use a rod thing to sort it properly first , you might be totally unprepared for what comes out. The THING that came out of mine was like a horse’s tail. I needed a big bowl to put it in and dear god, the smell! The SMELL! I was retching and retching.

BoreOfWhabylon · 04/07/2019 21:31

I keep a crochet hook in the bathroom for this purpose.

Haworthia · 04/07/2019 21:32

I can hook out vast amounts of hair with tweezers. It’s really satisfying. Gross, but satisfying.

Ronsters · 04/07/2019 21:51

Mr Muscle usually does it. If all else fails, a plunger.

Bepositive123 · 04/07/2019 23:03

If you don't want to see/clean the hair mess, you might want to try 1 cup baking soda + 1 cup vinegar followed by hot water. Repeat it a number of times.

FredaFox · 05/07/2019 20:41

Than!s so much for all the advice, I'll be tackling it with your tips!
