Does anyone use healing stones/crystals?

I suffer pretty seriously from MH issues and I am wondering if these could help at all?

If anyone has any recommendations that would be great!

They might have a placebo affect of making you feel ‘better’ purely because of their aesthetics but they won’t actually do anything.

I have some because they are ‘pretty’ no more no less.

MaryBoBary · 04/07/2019 15:10

I used them and still do now and really feel better for it. It may be placebo, it may not but the end result is the same. Best thing to do is go to a crystal shop and talk to them. They are not expensive and worth the try in my opinion.

No, you’d honestly be better seeing your gp again. All that will happen is you’ll be poorer abc you’ll have a load of pretty stones

I am currently on medication but was looking for a "boost" so to speak.

I have tried CBD oil but the taste was so awful I couldn't carry on to see if it even made a difference!

Some mental health problems may be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain and therefore looking at a pretty coloured stone or even rubbing under your armpits is going to do bugger all.

However, if you find keeping your home looking nice and a pretty ornament lifts your mood then that’s fine but it won’t alleviate depression or specifics mental health problems.

Soola · 04/07/2019 15:49

5 htp helped my son and is available from amazon and Holland and Barrett.

Babdoc · 04/07/2019 15:54

I’m irresistibly reminded of that hilarious Mitchell and Webb sketch about the “Alternative A and E”.
Standing over a road crash victim, shouting “His chakras are fading, quick, get the crystals!”!
And “He was hit by a blue Nissan - dilute some blue paint ten million times in water and give him some..”
Sorry, OP, as a retired doctor I admit I’m biased towards medicines that actually work. But there is benefit in anything that cheers you and lifts your mood- whether that’s a pretty stone, attractive scenery, exercise, or a chocolate eclair. I hope you are soon feeling better, but do see your GP or CPN if not.

I love crystals and have collected them for many, many years and have practically a full library of books on the subject, they sadly did not prevent my two nervous breakdowns or any of the MH issues I've had in my life. They do make me feel happy though, because they are beautiful creations of nature, I like having them scattered around the house, as a little visual uplift. The placebo effect can help some people feel better, just sitting with a crystal and feeling it, looking at it takes your mind off other things, much like practicing mindfulness. If you are really suffering you need to see your GP, buying crystals won't solve your problems, beautiful as they are. Anyone who tells you they will magically make everything better is a crook after a vulnerable persons money.

Just to clarify, I am currently under a mental health team for bipolar and take a handful of pills each day.

I wouldn't stop taking the pills, that would just be silly. But I read a book who made reference to them and got a bit curious.

For anyone who is interested, doing the couch to 5k has really uplifted my mood. I will definitely repeat the experiment with a chocolate eclair...

I like crystals and have lots on display around the house.

I want to believe in their properties hence having lots of tourmaline on door frames and rose quartz in the bedroom etc but I'm not convinced really that it's not placebo although that said DH wears lapis lazuli bracelets for migraine and he hasn't had a migraine since and any headaches are very mild.

Who knows, just because we can't 'prove' scientifically right now how they could possibly work doesn't necessarily mean they definately don't.

I have worn them as jewellery too but never really felt much different really.
You are supposed to wear on the left hand side.

Interestingly, I had a hematite bracelet and every time I wore it without fail after an hour or so I would feel seriously off balance and woozy, if I tried to walk I would fall over and if I didn't take it off my heart would start going funny.

I gave it to my mum and within the hour she was feeling really weak and like she was going to have a heart attack.
Took the bracelet off and gave her a drink of water and she was fine.

Weirdest thing.

I'm undecided on the crystal healing thing I guess

EnidButton · 04/07/2019 17:21

You'd be better off with acupuncture or a massage if you want to try alternative therapies. The experience if them might be relaxing at least.

Meditation is very good and is towards the alternative side of things.

But crystals won't do anything. I find the hippy dippy crystal type shops nice to look round because they're often playing calming music and smell good. So choosing crystals might feel nice. Plus a lot of them are really lovely colours or smooth like worry stones. So having a look and buying a couple of rocks wouldn't do any harm. Just don't expect them to actually do anything beyond look pretty.

brodskt · 04/07/2019 19:42

I must say I disagree with the idea that crystals are merely decorative. They have powerful energies, and are used in computers, cell phones, clocks and watches, amongst other things for that reason! I would say - you feel drawn to the idea, so give them a go, since crystals are a very safe form of healing tool. It depends what your focus is, but rose quartz is a good idea for calm, loving, healing energy; amethyst for clarity; lepidolite is said to be good for bipolar (I have never used this crystal), and there are so, so many others that are good for balancing mind and body, emotions, etc. I honestly suggest that you try the one or ones you are most drawn to, and then research their benefits once you've chosen. I really don't want to sound too airy fairy, but in my experience it's important to follow your intuition in these matters (which is why I am recommending you give it a go - because you are obviously tempted to!) If you read up on the use of crystals in computer technology, you'll soon see that they can 'hold' information, so the other thing you must do is cleanse your crystals, which can be done with rock salt or even just water. That's to keep their energy bright and open. Another interesting feature of crystals is that it is not unknown for cracks in them to heal up!! Food for thought, at least! Good luck x

Sweet Baby Jesus.

Wonderlustwoman · 05/07/2019 17:22

Theres a super Informative lady on Facebook called Crystal heaven who has loads of info about every crystal and even some spectacular peices at excellent prices 😊

Where to begin ... get some science education PLEASE

MaryBoBary · 05/07/2019 21:14

Not sure what the need for the negative posts is. Nobody should mock anyone else for trying something different. I tried it because I was sick of taking antidepressants and desperately wanted something to help me. And it did. If you are I by wrested enough to post about it OP then go for it. And as a side note to the sarcastic comment above regarding crystal shops - you could get 3 or 4 small hand crystals for the same price as a prescription so it really doesn't break the bank. Don't feel silly for giving it a try.

SummerRainSmellsFab · 05/07/2019 21:23

posting big so is seen

Poster above I am sure you mean no harm but to op

DO NOT TAKE 5HTP WITH PRESCRIPTION MEDS. IT CAN CAUSE SEROTONIN SYNDROME AND IS V DANGEROUS

DonkeyHohtay · 05/07/2019 21:31

Look pretty and might invoke a placebo response. They can't have an effect on you though.

brodskt · 06/07/2019 21:50

I just wanted to say, in my defence, that I only posted here to provide a different perspective, since it seemed to me that the OP wanted to give crystals a try (not as a replacement for prescribed medications, but in addition) & that the responses were overwhelming negative. But I would also like to add that I have a science education, believe it or not! - and that scientific breakthroughs don't tend to stem from narrow-minded thinking, as a general rule...

IdblowJonSnow · 06/07/2019 21:57

Give the crystals a shot! They are pretty and can't do any harm!
A friend of mine gave me a stone years ago which was meant to aid a very specific issue for me. Issue hasn't occurred since. I'm sure it's a coincidence but I'm very attached to it and it makes me smile. Wink
But obvs don't not be trying other meds either.
My very sensible gp swears by acupuncture - never tried it myself. Who knows, some things are worth a try.

Soola · 07/07/2019 06:39

@SummerRainSmellsFab thank you ever so much for your reply and information. I was not aware of that and will now always mention it if recommending 5-htp.

SummerRainSmellsFab · 07/07/2019 07:08

@Soola no worries. Sorry if I seemed s bit shouty. It happened to me on anti d and took it and got quite unwell until I realised and got help

Fucksandflowers · 07/07/2019 07:48

They are pretty and can't do any harm!

Depends on the stone and what you do with it!
Some people make crystal water to drink but some crystals will make you very sick if you ingest them.

Some crystals like malachite are very toxic and even handling them can make you sick, though malachite is safe if polished and undanaged.

Soola · 07/07/2019 08:43

@SummerRainSmellsFab I’m grateful to you, it’s very useful information.

My son was originally given an anti psychotic drug after a ten minute chat with a counsellor who has never met him before, which he took for a week and made him feel a lot worse than he already did and we urged him to stop taking him.

He stopped taking them but still has a low mood and I came across the 5-htp on a forum and asked a guy all about it and my son went and bought some and took it and it helped him.

He’s fine now and no longer takes anything.

So I often recommend it but now I can state not to be taken alongside prescribed medication.
