Taking child out of school for a holiday..

I’m looking to see what people’s thoughts are here.

I have 2 DC and the eldest is starting school this year. My partner and I are going to a large city a small drive from ourselves in the summer to get married (very small wedding as a lot of family members don’t speak and a lot of tension).

We aren’t going to have a party either due to the family issues so we had planned to go away on holiday next summer in the holidays. For 1 week it was going to cost £3000 and that’s including 1 x free child space. I’ve just looked online and for 1 week in May it is £1800.

We are really tempted to do this instead. We are also in Scotland so no fines for taking kids out... but I also feel like a bad mum for debating it.. help!

Would like to add that it would be our first family holiday/honeymoon!

No question, I would (and have) done it and I’m an ex teacher and responsible parent!

i wouldn't think twice, especially for such a special occasion.

With a child that young I wouldn't think twice. We've taken our two out for a few days the past couple of years with the school's permission and I haven't noticed any ill effects

My son starts school in September and we've already booked a week away next June. The new head has laid down the law re term time holidays. I can tell we are going to get on fabulously. Grin

The worst offenders at our school are the parent governors!

OP if your eldest will be in reception it'll be fine. At any age they could be off sick for a few days anyway - they catch up.

Pinkmalinky · 04/07/2019 14:04

Reception age is fine but please bear in mind for the future that May/June is exam period. I know it’s far in the future for you but worth noting.

Thanks for the replies! it will definitely be getting booked! Woo

Another vote to book!

KMoKMo · 04/07/2019 15:15

Another one who would book it. Life’s too short and £1000 can go toward extra curricular activities which imo are just as important as education. Have a wonderful time.

I'm taking mine out for 3 days in May. We'll go away the Wednesday half term (for 10 days). It was more cost effective / better flights than the half term week Shock

Its after the SATs for the y1 child and other child will be in reception.
