Blocked toilet

Meckity1 · 04/07/2019 12:57

I have a blocked toilet. I tried the washing up liquid trick and it turned a block toilet into a very slowly draining toilet which didn't get rid of 'logs'. I've just dumped in a load of white vinegar, more in hope than anything else, but would be grateful for any suggestions.

Don't want to scoop stuff out until after washing machine repair man has been (or, if possible, at all), but any kind suggestions very welcome.

Thank you.

Hot water...it stinks but breaks up and shifts it

Meckity1 · 04/07/2019 13:01

@Oldraver Thanks!

If it's just 'logs' that need breaking up pour a bucket of water from a height, repeat as necessary. This won't work if there is a blockage further down the system and the water is just backing up.

A bucket full of water poured in with force or plunge with a mop.

Meckity1 · 04/07/2019 13:07

@CaptainMyCaptain I think there is a blockage further down as the water is draining really slowly. Thank you

@goingtotown I might try that once the washing machine has gone - the bucket of water. I've only got one of those sponge bendy mops so I don't think it would work the same. Thank you.

Have you tried a plunger?

Meckity1 · 04/07/2019 13:36

@Gingerkittykat I'm going to have to get one : (

We need a new bathroom, and I don't want to think of the state of the pipes.

If there's anything in the pan that you can see blocking the bend break it up with a wire coat hanger. Then use the buckets of water held high above the bowl to force things through.
Do you use wipes? Even the flushable ones can cause a blockage.

BlueSkiesLies · 04/07/2019 13:43

Wire coat hanger
Hot water
Bucket dumped form a height
Plunger

DirtyDennis · 04/07/2019 13:45

caustic soda

DirtyDennis · 04/07/2019 13:45

Sodium hydroxide

Haworthia · 04/07/2019 13:46

Definitely a wire coat hanger. Gross, but preferable to pouring more substances in and risking a flood!

gamerchick · 04/07/2019 13:47

If the water is still draining away, albiet slowly. Fill a bucket up with water, hold on up a height and DUMP the water in at the same time as flushing the chain. Might take a couple of goes.

If the water isn't draining away at all then get the rubber gloves out and a bag.

Cheesecake53 · 04/07/2019 13:51

You can create your own plunger by cutting off the end of a two-litre-bottle (and keeping the lid on). That helped me a couple of times, but I have a plunger now.

averylongtimeago · 04/07/2019 13:52

If the usual "tricks" aren't working, the blockage coukd be further down.
Can you see out side where the soil stack comes out if the bathroom? Is there a drain cover or manhole lid nearby you can lift?

If there is, lift the drain lid and look. If it is full of yuk then the blockage is further along the drain run and you will need someone to rid the drains to shift it.

If it looks clear, get someone to flush the loo and watch what happens- it should be running freely, or is it a slow trickle?
If it's a slow trickle, it's blocked between the loo and the manhole.

Even if you can't unbung it, knowing where the blockage it will help keep the plumbers bill down as he won't have to check every pipe before he finds the right one.

mummmy2017 · 04/07/2019 13:53

Did you see the one with cling film over the loo. Under the seat and you can pump it....

Meckity1 · 04/07/2019 13:54

@DirtyDennis that sounds scary and I am pathetic and accident prone

@poppym12 no wipes. However DH finally insisted on using thicker toilet paper and we have a weird bend in the drain so suddenly he gets a posh paper experience and I get to unblock the loo meh

@gamerchick it's draining slowly. I shall brace myself after washing machine repair man has been

@Haworthia you may or may not believe it, but I don't have a wire coat hanger, I went mad a few years ago and switched to all wood ones with just metal hooks when Matalan had a sale. Blush I should have saved one

@BlueSkiesLies I'm going to have to buy a plunger for future issues

Thank you

Mop with a plastic bag round the end used as a plunger if not already mentioned.

MaMisled · 04/07/2019 14:00

Poke a coat hanger down there and round the bend.

Davros · 04/07/2019 14:04

We have two items in our home toolkit - unbent coathanger for big jobs and unbent paperclip fir small jobs Grin
I won't buy M&S 3-ply bog paper because it's a bog blocker. Good luck

Pinkmalinky · 04/07/2019 14:05

We tried literally all of the above for ours but the problem was too far down so needed a professional. Sometimes none of the tricks work and you sadly have to fork out.

Meckity1 · 04/07/2019 14:06

It's times like this that I wish we hadn't got rid of all the wire coat hangers. I've been furtling around with the duck long handled thingy.

Appreciate the help. I'm going up to see if anything has changed. Still waiting on washing machine man before I get working on the loo

Mop and a plastic bag. There's a video on YouTube.
My husband is a profligate user of toilet paper and I have to resort to this a lot occasionally

Meckity1 · 04/07/2019 14:32

@Howyoualldoworkme I may have the wrong sort of mop. I may have to improvise.

I preferred the less expensive, non clogging loo paper, but I got outvoted.

Howyoualldoworkme · 04/07/2019 14:43

Meckity1 My mum first showed me the trick and she used a broom handle and taped the bag round the end of it. The idea is to use the bag to create a vacuum.
