What to do after swimming stage 7 (rookie lifesaver????)

Dd has just passed her swim stage 7. Her swim teacher offered to put her in the squad (dd doesn't want to devote the time needed for this). She could continue on to stage 8 but that's just endless boring lengths, and she is understandably not too keen on that either.

The other options are

  1. to quit swimming lessons but that would mean sitting at the side of the pool whilst her younger siblings have lessons
  2. to do a rookie lifesaver course (the pool said they'd see if there is enough interest in starting up a course for this)

Is rookie lifesaver more 'fun' than stage 7 onwards? Dd just got incredibly tired of swimming endless distances with no real fun stuff like diving or jumping.

DS did rookie lifeguard and water polo. He enjoyed them, but competitive swimming is now his thing. It does take total commitment though.

I did Rookie Lifesaver (admittedly 20 years ago) and really enjoyed it. It’s much more fun and useful than swimming lengths. I also went on to do Bronze Medallion and it came in really handy as something to talk about on my UCAS form, friends who did it with me got part time jobs as lifeguards as well so definitely worth looking at the lifeguard stuff!

At that stage (nearly 30 years ago) I did bronze lifesaver (swimming in pyjamas!) and then diving lessons.

Water polo...!

It’s a brilliant sport.

My eldest did it for a few years - I became so smug. “Oh you play football....in 2 meters of water...???”. “Oh Rugby...dd1 used to play that, now she does it in 2 meters of water....”

Genuinely one of the toughest sports in the world so ideal for competitive children

Perhaps she could just swim for enjoyment?

Would really recommend the Rookie Lifeguard DS loved it, he was taught some basic first aid skills etc. And it was different activities each week which kept it interesting
