I have a 12 year old foreign student arriving tomorrow and I need to sort out some lunches for him to eat at home. I tend to just grab a packet of crisps and an apple, so can you inspire me with some simple things I can offer him with mainly store cupboard ingredients?

So far I have:
Cheese/ham & tomato sandwich
Bacon butty
Cheese on toast
Beans on toast
Scrambled egg on toast
Eggy bread

Thanks

Can you share which nationality?
British way of eating sandwich (bread) and crisps for lunch may be bit of a shock, if their culture is used to more substantial lunch.

Baked sweet potato with topping
Various salads
If you have a toastie maker or panini press I’d image he’d be happy.
Tuna pasta
Bagel with cream cheese
Cheese and crackers
Fritata

Small pizza with salad, corn or carrot sticks on side
Sausage roll or veggie rolls
Peanut butter sandwiches

Nearly every other country has a cooked meal for lunch and they don't see sandwiches as proper meals but just as a snack between meals. When I visit my in laws on the continent I often make myself a sandwich for lunch and they say "No, no, stop snacking. This isn't lunch". Then they insist on cooking me something like fish and potatoes. Just thought I'd warn you! All your bread based meals are very English... Which is fine if you want him to experience how we eat.

Falafels, veg sticks and hummus
Soup
Fish finger butties
Jacket potatoes
Salads (Greek salad, chicken Caesar, coronation chicken salad all favourites in our household)
Crusty bread with cheese/ham and salad
Leftovers from dinner the night before
Quiche and salad

Yes we need his nationality please

CherryPlum · 02/07/2019 18:16

Going against what others have said, I'd serve sandwiches, he'll be in the UK and that's what we have for lunch here 😁When you visit a country you want to live like the locals. I'd maybe add baguettes sometimes for a change.

pusspuss9 · 02/07/2019 20:41

English bread is pretty crappy honestly compared to German bread.

notso · 02/07/2019 20:51

When we had exchange students over they wanted McDonald's every day!

BarbaraofSevillle · 02/07/2019 21:06

Do most UK people really have sandwiches for lunch? Our office break room suggests otherwise. Most people have leftovers, soup, pot noodles or salads. Hardly anyone has sandwiches.

I'd get fish and chips or at least a chip butty or similar and if the weather's nice eat them outside somewhere.

stayathomer · 02/07/2019 21:08

Avocado egg and toast, salads, soups and rolls

BonnesVacances · 02/07/2019 21:11

Thanks all. He's Chinese but is at school in the UK so is used to British food.

I would suggest a 12 yo boy will probably need more than just a sandwich. That is the age at which they start constantly needing more food.

michellejj · 02/07/2019 22:48

As a Chinese, I really don't like cold sandwiches and those various things on toast for lunch. I prefer rice to bread. My favourite lunch options near my workplace are:
Grilled meat with rice and salad
Hot Burritos and wraps
hot soup plus a small sandwich
Lasagna and creamy Pastas

Basically lunch is supposed to be warm and balanced (contains veg and protein/fat).
