Chicken Pox in a vaccinated child

I think my DS has chickenpox despite having the vaccination (and the booster). I’ve attached pictures but they look very chickenpox like from my memory with older 3 DC.

Has anyone got any experience of chickenpox despite the vaccine?

They don’t have the yellow fluid filled look to me, from this photo I’d say not CP.

My dd gets spots like that all the time and then they disappear
Doesn't look like pox to me either

Di11y · 02/07/2019 16:34

my dd had about 20 spots appear overnight. the test will be in 12-24 hours if there are a lot more and those ones go crusty.

Possibly bites? Plenty of things to get bitten by at this time of year.

DS recently had chicken pox at 4 months old. We thought they were insect bites and weren't convinced it was chickenpox until DH caught it. DS obviously hasn't had the vaccine but must have passive immunity from me/breastfeeding. Therefore I'd say they could well be chickenpox very mildly.

DreamingofSunshine · 02/07/2019 17:37

My paediatrian said they'd never seen CP in a vaccinated child before. DS had a few spots and I'm immunosuppressed so we got checked out and it was just a rash that cleared up.

Pimmsypimms · 02/07/2019 17:37

My dd was fully vaccinated against chicken pox and she caught them. She only had 4 or 5 spots on her though. She was also vaccinated against mumps which she caught too!

BrienneofTarthILoveYou · 02/07/2019 18:31

I'd say it's very mild chicken pox (presumably because of the vaccine).

Blankiefan · 02/07/2019 18:33

DD got it despite being vaccinated. There were only a dozen spots on her, they never blistered and she wasn't poorly during it. Was only off nursery a couple of days.

I was glad we'd had her vaccinated as she has eczema so we had been worried what a nasty case would have done to her skin

WeedsAndMoss · 02/07/2019 18:41

Doesn't look like chicken pox Wine

ShivD · 02/07/2019 18:59

Thanks all, he has a mild temperature too which I should have mentioned at the start but I just thought he had a bit of a cold until he scratched his belly and I saw lots of red spots staring back. Could be a viral rash I suppose...

Do you know if CP is going round nursery / school?

FenellaMaxwell · 02/07/2019 21:33

That looks more like something’s bitten him

TuckMyWin · 02/07/2019 21:38

Could well be chickenpox. Give it a day and you'll know. My youngest ds got it despite being vaccinated (with booster). The first few spots, neither I nor nursery thought they were angry enough to be chickenpox. They looked a lot like your photo. Sent him into nursery the next day, and that evening when I picked him up they'd doubled in number. By the morning the original few were quite angry. But he was never 'sick', barely scratched - he definitely had it much milder because he was vaccinated.

Troels · 02/07/2019 21:40

Dd was vaccinated at 13 month in the US, she went on to have CP about 4 years later, oncce in school, but a very mild dose. I took her to the Doc thinking it couldn't be CP he confirmed it was and it wasn't the first he'd seen in vaccinated children.
Friends Ds had CP twice in two years after the vaccination.

Pooshy · 02/07/2019 21:42

Doesn't look like CP to me

Mine is vaccinated bad still had it, not badly but about 25 spots and quite grumpy

Wondering if he'll need the boost in 20 years or if he'll now have immunity

TuckMyWin · 02/07/2019 21:44

This was ds when his started.
