Expensive mistakes - purchases

So mine is an Apple Watch. Costs an extra £20 for 4G a month and I never use it. I'm not interested in fitness and I can't find any purpose for it my phone doesn't serve.

OTOH, my collection of scarves is such good value on cost per wear basis - Missoni, Westwood etc and I wear them all the time.

Interesting. Currently furiously resisting DH buying an expensive vaccuum.

We don't use our current ones (he claims they aren't effective, which is true to a certain extent, but they are 100% ineffective when they never come out of the cupboard). The cleaner will continue to use hers, not whatever we buy.

Husband will also want to cling onto his collection of unused vaccuums. Hmm.

SouthWestmom · 04/07/2019 10:43

Oh I forgot Muzzy that was a waste of money. So much crap has passed through my house it's shameful

Noeuf it was a lightning bolt moment when I realised how wasteful I've been in the past and decided to live much more frugally. I'm trying to make up for my past misdeeds by giving stuff away rather than selling it and have got on board with reducing our waste.

LittleLongDog · 04/07/2019 10:51

Various other obsessions that then get forgotten about. I almost bought a piano in the new year, thank goodness I stopped myself.

Yeah... I bought a piano.

To be fair I really enjoyed learning at the beginning, I just don’t have the money for lessons anymore and haven’t been motivated to teach myself.

Myotherusernameisshy · 04/07/2019 10:55

Oh I’ve done the ticket thing too, in the fog of having two under twos we bought tickets for a show and completely forgot to go. We didn’t even realise for a month! I had been so looking forward to going that I cried when I realised we had missed it Blush.

SisyphusDad · 04/07/2019 10:59

A Vector robot for DS2 for Christmas.

He had it on his desk in his bedroom and it used to go for walks during the day. It is supposed to stop before it falls off the edge, but...

We suspect it fell in to his waste bin and was unknowingly dumped by the cleaner.

ThankYouDebbie · 04/07/2019 11:17

We bought an antique dining table and chairs last year for £800. It's too big and dark for the room, the chairs are uncomfortable and I don't even like it. Will be selling it back to a dealer for a fraction of what we paid for it Sad

CilantroChili · 04/07/2019 11:48

Mulberry bag. Realised it was too heavy and structural. Sold it online for what I paid pretty much so not too bad.
Bought Philip Lim bag. Realised it’s too heavy and structural. It’s sitting in the wardrobe staring at me. I’ve used it twice Hmm

Moonsick · 04/07/2019 11:50

Automatic Fiat 500.

Was so desperate to own it, ended up hating the gearbox, the drive, the basic level of everything.

Plus the finance from Fiat was a total rip off - I pay £50 less a month now for a much newer car that was double the Fiat's purchase price. Insurance was much higher on the Fiat than on previous and subsequent cars.

Traded it in after 18 months, lost at least £2k.

CardinalCopia · 04/07/2019 12:00

Meile Blizzard CX1. I hate it. It sucks the rug up and on low setting doesn't remove the dog biscuit crumbs. Its a pain in the arse to store and I seriously miss my upright.
I daren't tell DH I hate it as I was adamant this stupidly expensive vacuum was the dogs bollocks.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 04/07/2019 12:01

I have a terrible habit of picking the skin on my face which has led to scarring.

I have paid a fortune in microdermabrasion over the years which helps a bit, only to then go and fucking pick at it again and make new marks.

CakeNinja · 04/07/2019 12:27

cilantro I found that with the Pashli bag, it’s just so bloody clunky and bulky.

vaselinda · 04/07/2019 12:47

Gig tickets for my favourite artist who v rarely tours...

Woke up the morning after the show, I'd got blackout drunk and only remembered the beginning of the support act.

Cried instantly when I woke up Sad

StormTreader · 04/07/2019 13:20

Karcher pressure washer. Got it for £200 refurbished, put it to one side for "when I have time".
Eventually got time to use it, didn't work.
Past the returns window, and apparently only official repairers will touch them for another £200.

Its sitting in my storage cupboard until I can face just taking it to the tip.

ANiceLuxury · 04/07/2019 14:10

I could be here all day..

First car - piece of shit cost £1700 and in 2 years i spent about £2000 on repairs.

Loads of shoes that hurt my feet etc

Chiropractic treatment for 2 years costing thousands.

Various household accessories that i quickly “go off”

Tadpoletofrog · 04/07/2019 14:14

£100s on a French Horn and lessons. Was all going well for a couple of years, i got to grade 3ish standard when my teacher moved out of the area. I can't find another teacher who teaches beginner adults in the evenings. Not had a lesson for two years. French Horn sits sadly in my wardrobe until i find a new teacher. Keep going to sell it, but don't want to part with it.

Pinkmalinky · 04/07/2019 14:23

Hated my bread maker too. I claimed to love it at the time but I really didn’t, it made horrible bread and it always had a hole in the middle because the blade thing at the bottom (the mixer thing) got stuck in the dough... I gave it to my Mum.

Agreed with Chanel No 5, it does stink of old women.

I’m going to say our home as well although DH would hate me for saying it Grin. We bought a doer upper for a fraction of the price compared to other houses in this area but my god has it caused us stress... Not convinced it’s been worth it. The woodchip wallpaper on our bedroom walls took a month to remove. The stairs are still a working progress, seven months later... We had to rip all of the carpets out and put hard wood down, change the old school back boiler to a combi, install a bath because it only had a shower...

ahhgowan · 04/07/2019 14:27

Reading these is making me feel better about my life. I'm always buying stuff that turns out to be shit or that I just can't be arsed using.

Slow cooker
Nutribullet
£200 dehumidifier
£350 air purifier
£190 private drs fees (still haven't got any further than with the normal drs)
Greenhouse and loads of plants which I lost interest in and have now all died.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 04/07/2019 14:42

Botox - only once for £300. Made no difference.

Maxineputyourredshoeson · 04/07/2019 15:31

I’m so glad I’m not the only one....

An old car, I hated it and paid far too much on finance.
My living room - I loved my old wallpaper and when I saw it in a different colour I bought that to redecorate with. I hate the colour. We also changed our sofas I absolutely hate them. I want to redo the whole room again but it’s only been 6mths and can’t afford too.
Shoes and clothes, far too many over the years.

I didn’t buy it, it was a gift from my mum but my bed. I had been looking at it for ages, had my heart set on it and now after having it around a year hate it and wish I’d kept my old one.

CurtainsAndCords · 04/07/2019 15:58

Expensive duvet and cover purchased in November.

It's too hot. But it was so expensive I can't bear to admit defeat.

midsomermurderess · 04/07/2019 16:53

A sofa from Loaf. Such a bad buy. The wrong colour was delivered but it seemed such a hassle to get it sent back I tholed it. It's awful and faded after 3 years. The cushions, feather filled, were terrible. You ended up sitting on the bones of your arse as they flattened terribly. I now wholeheartedly hate it and am seriously thinking of getting rid of it. And I will never buy from them again. So much hype about their products, so far from the reality.

ooohhhhcrap · 04/07/2019 22:25

Where to start Blush

A collection of irregular choice shoes still in the boxes and not all been worn not even once Blush

I have about £1000 worth and the only pair I have worn are so bloody uncomfortable they spent more time in my hand than on my feet Hmm

A£600 pray for middle dd who we only managed to keep in til she was about 5 months as she hated it so sold it for about £150 Hmm

The juicer sitting on kitchen side collecting dust

The food mixer and all the baking equipment I spent a fortune on a whim and never use because I don't have time

The hallway stairs and landing carpet.
Only bought and had fitted 18 months ago.
Was bloody expensive after having years of cheap carpets. Absolutely hate it. HmmIt marks all the time ,it looks scruffy and I have to resist the urge to rip it up every time I go up or down the stairs

Gertie75 · 04/07/2019 22:40

I love my window vac and air fryer.

My mistakes were a memory foam mattress - bloody uncomfortable and hot, I don't know why I ever wanted a mattress to remember me and not instantly bounce back.
Wooden flooring - thought it'd be practical as we had dogs but took ages to clean, instead of a quick vac I had to sweep, mop and leave to dry and then as soon as I or a dog stepped foot on it you could see the footprint.

Dyson air wrap - takes longer to dry hair than a conventional dryer, the smoothing attachment doesn't smooth and the curl attachment only does from midway down to the ends and those have dropped within an hour.

SouthWestmom · 04/07/2019 22:46

I hate our memory foam mattress.

I sold my IC shoes for £5 each at a car boot Shock

I don't know what a window vac is but I suspect I want one
