If your DC are about 10, what do they do in their free time?

I feel a bit guilty complaining because they are really very good, but we seem to be in a bit of an awkward time- too old for toys as such, too young for too much tech.

In this weather mine play outside a lot, also sometimes board games, cooking/baking (more rarely), reading (with a bit of nagging), drawing, and of course TV.

LakeFlyPie · 02/07/2019 11:11

Trampolining, scooting, biking, skateboarding, playing out with friends in road (cul-de-sac) or local park. Playing with remote control cars, Lego, rediscovering old toys.
Also watching YouTube, playing Minecraft, occasionally drawing, crafting and not enough reading.

RoundingError · 02/07/2019 11:13

Reading, dancing (classes and just for fun at home), some music practice, more reading, little bit of texting friends and the one game on her phone, playing with her sister (which might be top trumps or another game, or doing gymnastics moves together).

Board games is a great idea, any recommendations? Might dig out some playing cards too.

DD went through a colouring book phase a while ago, but they both seem to have stopped drawing.

I wish they’d read more. We’ve a house full of books

Honestly? I think by ten we were heading into that techy area.. Playing on whatever console we had at the time, watching rubbish videos on YouTube.. I had one who was more inclined to read for pleasure than the other. And Lego was still popular (still is with my 12 year old).

My 10 year old DS has thankfully just come out the other side of a fortnite obsession. At the moment he likes to rollerblade, a bit of roller hockey, football, ride his bike, Lego, Pokemon go, Harry Potter. He is making his way through the Harry Potter books atm. He likes swimming and trampolining also.

They went through a poker phase Grin but currently it’s Scrabble and Bananagrams. They do like Monopoly, but it needs more people and I’m not up for playing it as it takes so long. Top trumps is still popular with my younger one and the 10yo is prepared to play for a bit. I’m looking for new games for the summer holidays - I got Traffic Jam last year, which kept all of us happy in the airport last year (taking turns to play - it’s single player).

ElizaPancakes · 02/07/2019 11:23

We don’t have a garden so they bike up and down the street (just learned!)

Play minecraft, forza and Destiny on Xbox. Try to limit this to max half an hour in the week and a couple of hours at the weekend.

They else enjoy building forts as well, they’re not much for crafty stuff but they enjoy Lego every now and again.

Ilovemylabrador · 02/07/2019 11:28

Reading arts and crafts (we have a sideboard full of stuff that is creativity) animals here so they have those to look after. Adult colouring books, adult dot to dot board games (reversi, monopoly, Pictionary and cludeo and destination are the favourites at the moment and the settlers of catan, trampoline, pool and swimming, playing with the sprinkler! They all enjoy knitting in the winter 😂 and the recycle challenge (when the bin is overflowing) they get 3 hours to make something amazing . We have a local farm and pottery place here and all enjoy those and NT places and walks!

Ilovemylabrador · 02/07/2019 11:29

And yes Lego ! We have huge outside container with outside croquet, badminton, balls etc in them as well for outside. Charity shops are your friend here!

bookmum08 · 02/07/2019 11:29

Scooting up and down the path while listening to music on her mp3 player.

Nintendo and Xbox (mostly Mario Kart type games and Minecraft).
Watching American comedies on E4.
Reading and writing fan fiction.
Rare occasions crafty things.
Eating crisps.

Canulation · 02/07/2019 11:32

Thank you, some great ideas. They do have tech but I’m desperately trying to keep it at a minimum. DS can be really affected mood wise.

Play outside with or without neighbour children. Football, bikes, skateboard, scooter, hide and seek or just chatting.

Inside: reading, tablet, some Netflix, makes tinfoil sculptures, drawing, tries to bake, which usually means I’m baking. Grin

feemcgee · 02/07/2019 11:36

Football with friends, trampoline, lot of x box.
