When you squee over someone else’s engagement ring, are you genuinely excited?

Or are you doing it because it’s the “right” thing to do? I do it because everyone else does and I feel it’s expected. But sometimes wonder whether everyone else is genuine?

Obviously I’m happy and excited for close friends & family, i’m not a complete misanthrope! I mean like when people gather round in an office or at a party with friends/people who you don’t know that well.

I squee and it's genuine excitement about the ring and the wedding. I love both!

@knobblykneesandturnedouttoes thanks for the clarification. Can honestly say I don't think I've ever squee'd at all.
Pretty happy about that though :-)

The word squee makes me feel a bit queasy.

AlexaAmbidextra · 01/07/2019 22:20

Nah. The only thing I’ve ever been known to squee over is a kitten.

delilahbucket · 01/07/2019 22:23

Excited for the engagement but not the ring. I found it really strange when I got engaged and people kept insisting I show them the ring. I didn't think they could possibly be excited about it. I've never asked to look at someone's ring when they've said they got engaged.

The use of “squee” in this way doesn’t bother me. It’s just the way language changes. It’s just like using “woo” as in “I don’t believe in woo” or “i’m not at all woo”. Both developed from the actual sound that people make during the situations mentioned.

Yes, people could ask “do you squeal with excitement when.....” but it’s shorter to type “do you squee when....” and everyone knows what you mean. It might annoy you but you DO know what it means precisely, don’t you, admit it! Grin

“Squeal” could mean a noise made out of fear or from being tickled or annoyance or even making a noise like a piglet! So “squee” just means “make a squeal of excitement over something” to me.

Often it's politeness, but some rings I love genuinely; I do like sparkly things.

More than one big diamond I find a bit OTT but a decent sized solitaire I would probably gush over. I also really love square or baguette cut (sort of art nouveau arrangement) diamond rings. I'm not a big fan of mixing colours e.g. I didn't like Princess Diana's ring.

PerspicaciaTick · 01/07/2019 23:29

I'd probably be genuinely delighted about the engagement, but the ring would mostly be politeness.

I'm just being polite when I tell you how lovely your ring is and how gorgeous your baby is, I couldn't give a toss.

Show me a puppy, a kitten or pretty much any baby animal and it's a different story, squee!
