Would you drink alcohol with maggots in?

Made some cherry bourbon with cherries from our garden. I did check for maggots as a de-stoned them but a few escaped me and are currently sitting in the bottom of the demi-john. The next step is to strain it, which will get rid of them, but they've obviously already been sat in there.

Would you drink it or chuck it?

If it makes a difference we've been eating the cherries so have probably eaten some maggots too (they are tiny). But we'd be offering the bourbon to friends in cocktails.

I'd chuck it, although the counter argument to that is tequila.

TheQueef · 01/07/2019 18:17

Tequila.
I don't remember much but I wasn't arsed about the maggot Blush

Soola · 01/07/2019 18:17

Chuck up and then chuck out.

You should market it as a new fashion drink

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 01/07/2019 18:22

As a veggie - no. But can’t you buy tequila with something wriggly in it?

gamerchick · 01/07/2019 18:23

Na, pickled maggot wouldn't bother me. Just take them out.

MenuPlant · 01/07/2019 18:23

I'd honestly not worry in the slightest. They're long dead and were in the original fruit, it's not like it's gone off and got maggots.

The alcohol content will have long killed germs. And they aren't poisonous anyway they just squick us out for valid reasons.

I'd strain and drink and think no more of it!

RedSheep73 · 01/07/2019 18:25

I'd discreetly dispose of them and try to forget about it... we get them in our plum tree and while they're unpleasant they aren't the same kind of maggots that live in rotting meat etc, they won't do you any harm.

JazzersMaw · 01/07/2019 18:32

No.

RainOrSun · 01/07/2019 18:33

From the title I was "how did that happen, no way", but having read the message, actually, strain it and drink it!
Its not that the booze has gone off, but that there were some crawlies in the fruit. Go for it.

mabelmylove · 01/07/2019 18:33

That is vile.

Flower777 · 01/07/2019 18:35

I couldn’t OP. Sorry

BogglesGoggles · 01/07/2019 18:38

This makes me think of donoghue v Stevens and I honestly don’t think I could stomach it

TheQueef · 01/07/2019 18:45

The maggots had a happy death and the booze is sterile, don't waste it send it to me

CherryPlum · 01/07/2019 18:45

It's pretty desperate

Hmmmbop · 01/07/2019 18:48

The straining is part of the process rather than to get rid of the maggots, though it does also do that.

And yes, the maggots are tiny and very different from the rotting food type (the fruit wasn't rotten).

Hmmmbop · 01/07/2019 18:50

CherryPlum why is it desperate? I'm not drinking it tonight, I'm making cherry bourbon for future cocktail making.

AdorableMisfit · 01/07/2019 18:55

I would have absolutely no problem drinking that.

dreichuplands · 01/07/2019 19:00

I would drink it but I have eaten ants eggs in the past. Such things are delicacies in some parts of the world.

dreichuplands · 01/07/2019 19:02

Isn't wine often strained with fish guts or something similar?

Hmmmbop · 01/07/2019 19:08

dreichuplands yep. And beer. Isinglass is it's technical name. I'll just be using a conical sieve and muslin though!

OP posts:
BerylCrow · 01/07/2019 19:12

Yes I would.

I bet most of the horrified ones eat prawns and meat. The maggots are at least vegetarian alcoholics.

Cuppa12345 · 01/07/2019 19:14

I'd not be fussed one bit.

Hmmmbop · 01/07/2019 19:14

Just to be really clear the maggots would be gone when it was drunk! They won't be consumed.

OP posts:
YourSarcasmIsDripping · 01/07/2019 20:00

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest, especially if they were all gone.
