Could I ask you to look at my DS mouth ulcer please

My DS who is nearly 13 and now bigger than me Grin. Has an ulcer at the back of his mouth/ throat . He is normally not one to make a fuss but he is looking like a sad toddler today because of this - also has a minor fever even after paracetamol. I assume it was higher before (didn’t check Blush)

Is there anything I can do to help him other than paracetamol / ibuprofen?

Also is this just a mouth ulcer or is it more of a throat thing?

I’m not used to seeing him moping around like this!

Gargling with warm salt water will help

TigerBreadAddict · 01/07/2019 12:08

Where am I looking? I can’t see an ulcer
Throat looks inflamed though

Oldraver · 01/07/2019 12:09

I cant actually see an ulcer.

My DS is 13 and has just had what I think was a bad case of tonsillitus. Started off as fever with muscle ache and generally feeling off. Then came the bad throat...his tonsills and uvula where all red and swollen with little ulcers on them. He was wiped out for a week. He ended up with ulcers in his mouth.

This is a child who is never ill...school said there were a fair few off with this so maybe something your DS has coming on

Just looks like a sore throat to me, gargle with salt water and sip hot drinks.

Also he needs to clean the inside edges of his top molars a bit better 😬

Birdie6 · 01/07/2019 12:33

It looks more like tonsillitis - I can't see an ulcer. Gargle salty water or buy a sore throat spray - see the GP.

BumandChips · 01/07/2019 13:14

I can’t see an ulcer. Just seems like a sore throat. You can buy difflam spray from the chemist, give paracetamol and ibuprofen and make sure he drinks. If he doesn’t want to eat don’t worry. Try ice lollies.

nestertables · 01/07/2019 13:15

Is it the area on the left side of this photo besidr his uvula?
I had an ulcer here and it was quite possibly the worst pain I've ever experienced, it felt like my throat was sticking together and hurt everytime I moved my tongue/swallowed.

I had it for around a fortnight (visited the GP on day 2 and it was put down to a viral infection)
Gargling with warm salted water/corsydil mouthwash helped, regular paracetamol and a numbing throat spray meant I could eat and drink almost normally!

Isadora2007 · 01/07/2019 13:20

It’s not that bad really as in inflamed etc but ulcers really are painful. Gargling with something like diflam or corsidol (check age limit) and painkillers. Plus rest... ulcers are often from being run down.

User24689 · 01/07/2019 13:21

SeatoSki No need for that comment really. His teeth look clean. Teeth can be discoloured for many reasons, even in children and it often has nothing to do with oral hygiene. I'm not sure your comment is what the OP or her boy needs to hear right now.

Anyway OP, i second the difflam spray. I used it recently for bad tonsilitis and it really helped. Poor lad, hope he's better soon.

Soola · 01/07/2019 13:24

Gargle with salt water and eat some garlic.

endofthelinefinally · 01/07/2019 13:34

Show your pharmacist. You need a tongue depressor and a pencil torch to look properly.
I can't see an ulcer but his throat does look a bit inflamed.

6timesthemess · 01/07/2019 13:36

Seatoski he does brush his teeth but he has discolouration all over his teeth (you can’t see it on the picture but his two front teeth have spots on) which was caused by drugs he had as a baby - he was premature and in and out if hospital for the first few months.

There is def an ulcer - it’s visible quite clearly in real life at the centre of the red patch. I’m just not good at mouth photos Grin

He is fast asleep now but when he wakes up I’ll check again and take him to the pharmacy if it’s not better

Corsodyl ointment is amazing for mouth ulcers.

LoafofSellotape · 01/07/2019 13:55

Painkillers, salt water rinsing, lots of fluid and rest.

I can't see anything either and looks nothing like tonsillitis imo, hopefully he's just a bit under the weather.

Wallywobbles · 01/07/2019 13:58

I can see it in the app. Left of dangly bit.

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 01/07/2019 16:44

I can see it too. Ouch! I'm not sure if it's ok for children but difflam throat spray or oral rinse is the business. I had it when in hospital with tonsillitis. Check with the pharmacist. You can use paracetamol and ibuprofen alternately or at the same time too as long as you don't exceed the dosage. ice cold drinks help. Hope he's more Comfortable soon.

CatFaceCats · 01/07/2019 16:48

My son (7) just had ulcers on his tonsils - really bothered him for a few day. Thought it was perhaps the start of tonsillitis, but it wasn’t. He got a throat spray from the chemist, which helped a bit. But he had a weekend of high fever so lots of rest and liquids. A week later they were all healed and gone.

ifonly4 · 01/07/2019 17:13

How is he now? The fact a 13 year old is asleep midday and hasa slight temperature is a sign he's not feeling well. At this time fo day, if you haven't already perhaps ask the pharmasist to check and see if they have any advice.

Tahitiitsamagicalplace · 01/07/2019 17:19

I can see it. Ask for difflam mouthwash from the doc or pharmacist. Get him to gargle it. It's much much better than the throat spray.

Tahitiitsamagicalplace · 01/07/2019 17:20

Also soluble paracetamol and gargle that before swallowing will also help with the pain.

YouMaySayImADreamer · 01/07/2019 18:42

I can see it and that looks so sore. I had a mouth full of ulcers once, caused by a virus and difflam mouthwash was amazing for relief. I agree wih salt water inbetween doses of difflam.
