Tray of sugar cubes at preschool?

I took dc2 into preschool and on 1 of the free play tables there was a tray full of sugar cubes. Dc2 knows what they are as his gma lets him have them as sweets when he plays there (whole other thread). While I was chatting to the teacher dc2 had sat down and piled 4 of these cubes into his mouth straight away. A couple of the other kids then followed suit (not sure if they didn’t know what they were, I guess sugar cubes aren’t that common anymore). I moved dc onto a different table and he was playing quite happily there when I left (albeit with a mouth full of sugar).

Should a tray of sugar cubes be left unattended around 3yo’s? We have the strictest list of what we’re allowed to put into their lunch boxes (things like no raisins or yoghurts as they’re too high in sugar) but they leave them with a kilo of sugar.

I’m just surprised they were left to play with it unattended. I could understand if they brought it out to show them how to build stuff/ what happens when you put water on it etc as you could tell them not to eat it. But the free play table is just for them to did in and do what they like.

Would I be a dick to mention it to preschool? Or do you think they’ll have stopped kids eating it once they were properly ‘on duty’. They sort of just let kids do what they want when they first go in as teachers are sorting out lunches, speaking to parents etc.

Shock

No, not a dick at all,OP

I'd be complaining. Loudly.

Thanks katinski. I never know if I’m being a drama queen or not. I’m not overly strict on what dc eat and I’m happy for them to have sugar now and again as they do generally eat well and do loads of exercise. I wouldn’t be happy to leave them alone with a bag of sugar though!

I'd have walked out smiling, gone home, and drank a cuppa while picturing the staff wiping vomit off every object in the room & chasing 20 odd toddlers up the walls for the day.

Would a sugar cube potentially be a choking hazard?

Genuinely no clue how quick they melt in your mouth but had a couple of close calls when my own DS was small and got things stuck in his throat (bread, apple and a pound coin)

cheesemumma · 01/07/2019 12:25

🙄

TomKittensMumisaFruitloop · 01/07/2019 12:54

Out of all the things edible and non edible they could choose I can’t think why on Earth they would choose sugar cubes. It’s a ridiculous thing to leave for the kids to explore/play with/eat. I would definitely say something. It’s hypocritical to have rules about what you can send in for lunches and then give them access to a table full of bloody sugar .

Katinski · 01/07/2019 12:58

and I second what tomkitten above wrote....

Just...why?

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/07/2019 13:00

It's a really odd thing to put there as a free play thing.

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/07/2019 13:05

My Dd would have eaten them too, I used to let her have one if we were in a cafe that had them

Katinski · 01/07/2019 13:18

P'raps they get a kick-back from Tate&Lisle? Hook them in early, like...

Teddybear45 · 01/07/2019 13:22

Local nursery does this during the summer as they’ve had a few fainters and it’s the easiest thing to offer in an emergency without worrying about allergies. They have salt cubes too but funnily enough the kids don’t go near those.

Soola · 01/07/2019 13:22

Back in the 1970s we used to eat sugar cubes, cubes of unmade jelly rolled in icing sugar and butter from the little foil packets.

Happiest days of my life! Grin

Moodyfoodie · 01/07/2019 13:23

Weird. Definitely mention it

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 01/07/2019 13:26

Yum! I love sugar cubes as my nana used to give me them when I was little. My teeth are near perfect and my weight is normal. DC's and I love going out to cafes that have sugar cubes and always eat a few. So far the world has not ended and no one has any fillings.

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 01/07/2019 13:29

@Soola oooh the days of cubes of unmade jelly! They were the best. I feel sad that I never thought to roll it in icing sugar though. I'm veggie now otherwise I'd try it.
Mumsnet is full of the sugar police though 🙄

stressedandsore · 01/07/2019 13:32

Yeah probably not the best thing to have readily available for children that age...

-not the point but, I've never seen a sugar cube before? Where can I get some? BlushGrin

NanooCov · 01/07/2019 13:36

@Teddybear45 that's madness. If kids are fainting from the heat, then sugar will do nothing to help. They need hydration not sugar. If they have diabetic kids under their care the quickest way to help a hypo is with something like orange juice or apple juice.

TheCatThatDanced · 01/07/2019 13:37

Are they bloody mad? No. 1 the kids aren't horses...

No. 2 - leaving the parents to cope with the sugar rush come down thanks a lot!

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/07/2019 13:38

Most supermarkets have them

TheCatThatDanced · 01/07/2019 13:38

stressedandsore - local supermarket will sell sugar cubes in sugar area. May have to hunt for them. Tate and Lyle.

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 01/07/2019 13:38

Maybe some of the children identify as horses and this is part of their inclusivity policy?

Soola · 01/07/2019 13:46

Ooh look what I just found at the back of one of my kitchen cupboards!

I forgot we had them!
