Which career after Police?

justasyouare · 01/07/2019 08:26

A close relative has been in the police for just under 20 years but is looking for a career change. Has anyone, or their DP, relatives etc had a successful career change from the Police, and if so what did you/they do?
Thanks

There are a number of accountancy/ consultancy firms which offer specific programmes for police/ armed forces leavers. Variety of roles including project management, consulting, IT etc.

Everyone I know who does this seems to do very well (sample of 4!)

Do you mean officer? I know loads of people who have left to go on and do all kinds of things. Teaching, setting up an IT business, working in a zoo! Guess it all depends on on what they want to do.

I’m watching this thread with interest as DP due to retire next year but will only be mid 50’s. We can’t afford for him not to work at all for financial reasons plus it will probably drive him being at home 24/7.

A lady I worked with years ago had transferred her skills from forensics to SEN planner for the local authority.

She was great at her work, her skill set transferred very well.

Her skills were:
Listening, collecting information, relaying information accurately, recording accurately, Co-ordinating and liaising with so many providers and users, hosting meetings and getting things done quickly and methodically and keeping calm in stressful face to face situations.

Not an area I'd ever thought would transfer so well. She was fabulous at her job and much needed.

My DB has just retired from the police after 30 years (he will be 50 in September) and has got a job in the civil service. He is LOVING it - cannot believe how they care for his work / life balance and how flexible it is.

InTheHeatofLisbon · 01/07/2019 10:05

It's not the usual, but I work with two long serving ex cops in disability support work. One is an ex DCI, the other ex Superintendent. Both are in management of a residential care place for young adults with disabilities and they're phenomenal at what they do. Both said it's the experiences they had within the police that pushed them to this kind of work.

The stories are really inspirational. I’m going to tell DP about them to hopefully give him some encouragement for the future. We’re both quite nervous about him retiring. Is there a recruitment company which deals with ex police I wonder?

trixiebelden77 · 01/07/2019 10:15

I know a few ex-cops who went on to work for law enforcement agencies - the ones that investigate financial crime or consumer law breaches.

No guns or shift work or awful things but they get to use their skills.

I’ve just remembered that a former colleague of DP retired and then went into cyber security work. They’re really enjoying it. My DP lacks confidence and, after being in same organisation for 20 plus years, knows nothing outside of this. But reading on here, I can see that police skills must be transferable and (hopefully) in demand within other sectors. It’s just convincing DP of this so that he feels able to take the plunge, retire and find other work as we couldn’t live on his pension.

My friend went from the police into a senior project manager role in Finance Services.

Tarchie · 01/07/2019 11:35

Does anyone know if they’re are specialist recruitment agencies for ex police officers?

Finfintytint · 01/07/2019 11:38

Yes, just google ex police jobs and lots of agencies come up.

Tarchie · 01/07/2019 11:44

Thanks Finfinity, I’ll have a look.

I’m a housing officer for a large housing association and we have lots of ex police. Very transferable skills, decent money and flexible.

FogCutter · 01/07/2019 16:18

I worked in recruitment and have known ex police staff to become

Teachers - did something like the Teach First programme where you do on the job training to qualify as a teacher.
Investigation officers in big corporates (acting as liaison between business and police, investigating fraud, harassment and other gross misconduct)
H&S officers
Security guards
Trainers

Yugi · 01/07/2019 16:22

Border Force has always had lots of ex police or military as it is similar work with later retirement. Seems to be more seasonal workers now but still worth considering

ShatFic · 01/07/2019 16:28

The Gangmasters & Labour Abuse Authority www.gla.gov.uk are currently recruiting for people with a background in criminal investigations. They're a fantastic organisation and lots of staff are ex police.

RidgedPerfection · 01/07/2019 17:52

I am civilian Police Staff; most of my colleagues are ex police officers - but the difference to them is flexible working and no shift work (and no dealing with the public!).

TodoDoingDone · 01/07/2019 18:01

College of policing-teaching or writing policy
Independent office for police conduct
Teaching on criminology course or local police

Violetroselily · 01/07/2019 18:17

I worked for an insurer where we had a few ex police officers in our financial crime and staff/insider threat investigation teams
