Bugger. Conjunctivitis.

I've got conjunctivitis. I work in a school and a child in my class has it. Today my eye is itchy red and oozing yellow gunkEnvy I went to the pharmacist and was given some eye drops but she said if it gets worse I might need antibiotic drops. I know you're supposed to carry on but I really don't want to go to work looking like this! How am I supposed to keep wiping gunk from my eye without looking gross and spreading it to others?
I am really fed up and also feeling sorry for myself. Rant over. Any advice gratefully received.

I’d be tempted to get to a pharmacy ASAP tomorrow, say it’s got worse and get some chloramphenicol drops. If it’s bacterial they will work quite quickly and by the next day you shouldn’t have any gunk. If it’s viral I think you just need to ride it out but I believe it’s less gunky generally...

Ok thank you moreismore I was thinking along those lines. I feel a bit under the weather too, sore throat and a bit achy, but could just be coincidence.

What eye drops did the pharmacist give you?

It does sound like bacterial (rather than viral) conjunctivitis if you have visible yellow gunk discharge. You can buy antibiotic eye drops over the counter that contain chloramphenicol. If you bathe each eye individually with cooled boiled water using a cotton wool ball every hour or so and take an antihistamine to help relieve the itching this should help too and it should clear up in a few days.

Don't forget if you have used any eye makeup such as mascara since you got the infection then you should bin it and wash bedding (especially pillows) towels etc.

Golden eye contains and ingredient that kills the bacteria like a disinfectant and can be effective but if you don't see an improvement after using them for a couple of days I would go back and ask for antibiotic drops as they actually treat the infection.

Eyelid has swollen up overnight and eye was weeping through the night. I look very attractive this morning. Off to the doctors this morning.

Conjunctivitis is highly contagious, you don’t need to see your GP you can buy over the counter antibiotic drops. You shouldn’t be at work.
