Heatwave tips and tricks

Im wondering what people are doing in this heat to keep things cool and enjoy their days other than feel drowsy and sticky.

One of the best things working for me now is:

1- showering twice a day with toddler DS in lukewarm water

2- freeze grapes, berries, ice lollies, yoghurt dipped fruits and snack on them all day. Definately working with 17mo DS.

3- stay indoors in the midday hours.

If you have a traditional attic or loft leave the hatch open to let heat escape at night

MuttsNutts · 30/06/2019 17:51

Run cold water on wrist pulse points for a couple of minutes - it cools your whole body down Smile

Nooooo! It lets the spiders out as well and the zombies

  1. Have a luke warm bath before bed and don't bother drying off.
  2. Leave the bath water in - cool water will cool the house.
  3. All windows open all day and all doors open.
  4. Have the kids paddling pool by the washing line so you can stand in it when hanging the laundry up.

Yesterday was so hot we hardly ate anything. I need to know how to avoid eating everything in sight today, I'm ravenous. I've drunk about
4 pints of water today which usually stops me being thirsty.

floraloctopus · 30/06/2019 17:58

^stops me being hungry.

Fabulous tips. Off to poor cold water on wrists.

Variety of salads and cold-served dishes as our meals for the day.

Don’t be heavily pregnant.

Mummoomoocow · 30/06/2019 18:03

Curtains drawn, windows closed, blinds down when the sun is shining through the window

Opposite at night, let the cool air in and keep the heat from heating up the house!

6 months pregnant here and I’m feeling your pain

I thought having all the windows open all day was absolutely the wrong thing to do. As a pp said, keep windows shut and curtains or blinds closed from when it starts to get hot, until it cools down in the evening, especially south facing windows, then open as many as possible, top and bottom, overnight. Prop doors open as well to get as much cooler air circulating as you can.

Florencenotflo · 30/06/2019 18:15

😂 @hormonesorDHbeingadick @IABUQueen 32 weeks here... feeling your pain. I'm sat in knickers and a vest right now, all windows and doors open to create a draft! Such a lovely sight!

An ice pack or a bottle of frozen water in front of a fan blows an icy breeze. Just watch for condensation and electrics etc

IABUQueen · 30/06/2019 19:02

Wear wet socks while indoors which are soaked in cold water. With slippers on top lol.

Keep hair wet by wiping your head with cold water and wrapping it with wet bandana.

That how boiling I feel. Getting desperate

Definitely windows, blinds and curtains shut all day (especially when the sun is on the house). We then open everything up after 9ish and leave it all open all night including curtains

stephstrops · 30/06/2019 19:13

Oh and no internal doors shut over night which drives my firefighter DP mad

Fleurchamp · 30/06/2019 19:17

Make a "cold" water bottle in the fridge and then take it to bed and put it under your neck, by feet or on wrist. It does get a little wet with condensation but I find it keeps me lovely and cool.

IABUQueen · 30/06/2019 19:26

Frozen water in front of the fan is making a big difference to my life right now.

We are southfacing and I did the mistake of keeping my curtains open which basically means I’m inside a green house type of heat right now.

Frozen water bottle for the night sounds great!

Cold water bottle is a great idea might try that one tonight !

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 30/06/2019 19:32

I keep seeing people on facebook talking about those cool pet blankets that get cold when you touch them so ive ordered some for the kids to sleep on.

cranstonmanor · 30/06/2019 19:35

I'm the one sitting in a kiddie paddling pool in the garden, in the shade, reading a book. I don't have kids. It really cools me down.
