How can I help this poor cat?

Bach45691 · 30/06/2019 12:06

A cat visits our house frequently. It’s always looked skinny but it’s turned up today wheezing with a crusty nose and eyes. I’ve fed him and sent him on his way. I know he’s got a home, it’s a friend of a friend of a friend type of situation so I could track down the owners but I don’t really want to go round there (i don’t want to get involved in any conflict!).

I can’t afford the vets bills myself (I’ve got 2 cats of my own) but I really hate to see the poor thing suffer.

Would the rspca go round if I anonymously reported them? Are there charities that pay for cats to be treated?

Oh, poor thing. So lovely you are looking out for him. I'd definitely report it to the rspca, if that doesn't work perhaps report him to Cats Protection as a stray? From the sound of it, he could be if his owners aren't looking after him. Really hope he gets the help he needs; he may already be getting it but it's good to check just in case 🙂

You can take it to any vet and not pay by saying you found it and believe it to be unwell.

They will then scan for a chip and decide whether to treat it etc

Poor thing. Let us know how you get on.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 30/06/2019 13:34

RSPCA aren't very useful these days. Go straight to Cats Protection League.
Poor moggy.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 30/06/2019 13:39

Do you think he's micro chipped ( it doesn't sound like he is going by his condition though)

The weight of him sounds like an ongoing issue but now the poor soul sounds like he's very ill.

I would go with catching him and taking him to a Rescue if you can (I have read on sites for Rescues that you put a paper collar on him with a is this your cat message and phone number ) but if you are concerned for the health then report as a stray .

Of course he might have a medical condition that makes him thin.
He might have an allergy that makes him snotty and wheezy .

But he might well appreciate someone in his corner .

If all is well he'll be returned .

DontCallMeShitley · 30/06/2019 13:45

RSPCA may well take him and PTS, which would be sad for him if he can be treated, however he would need a decent home in order to have a chance.

His best chance would be if you could take him to a vet or a rescue and explain that you found him like that and could they help please, a donation maybe as well, if you can.

Bookworm4 · 30/06/2019 13:46

Better off with Cats Protection,RSPCA are too keen to pts

Shadow1234 · 30/06/2019 14:48

Would also say Cats Protection rather than RSPCA

Bach45691 · 30/06/2019 16:32

I’ve spoken to the rspca. They said if I can take him to their vets he’ll be treated for free but she couldn’t tell me if he’d then be rehomed or returned. This particular vets is 30 minutes away. I’m going to phone our local CPL tomorrow morning to see if they’ll treat him closer to home.

There’s nothing more I can do today, vets are closed and I’ve not seen him since so we’ll see what tomorrow brings.

Re him being thin. When he first turned up (last year) he had fleas and was very skinny and very hungry. I’ve also seen him bald patches on his head. I gave him a worming and flea treatment. A few weeks later he was looking so much healthier and we didn’t see much of him for a long time until now when he’s looking underweight again.

Is it possible his owners have gone off on holiday and left him to his fate or someone to feed him .

Poor thing sounds like he's had a rough deal for a while .

DontCallMeShitley · 01/07/2019 16:42

Poor little guy, I hope someone can help him.

ifonly4 · 01/07/2019 16:57

If you can get some support from Cats Protection, take that. Older ones and black/black and white are harder to rehome, so if he fits into this category and isn't microchipped to return to owner, I'd want to know what they'll do if they can't rehome. Taking him to a local vet, they'll always look for a microchip. If he has one, at least it will be highlighted that he needs treatment. If he doesn't look better in a week or so, then CP or RSPCA needs to be involved.

Bach45691 · 04/07/2019 14:19

Just an update if anyone is interested. I took him to the local vets, he wasn’t chipped but they found him on their system (small village) and his address is very close to ours. He hadn’t had any vaccinations since he was a kitten. He’s got cat flu so they gave him a couple of injections and asked me to return him where I found him. The rspca paid for the treatment. I’ll keep my eye out for him and if I see him looking poorly again I’ll take him back.

The RSPCA refused to help when we had a problem like this.

Loadsamoney and no help… Sad

Inforthelonghaul · 04/07/2019 15:04

@Bach45691 you are a star for helping him it really doesn’t sound as though he is a cared for pet poor little thing.

OneFlewOverTheMumsNest · 04/07/2019 15:19

I was going to say he might have cat flu. Our now sadly departed rescue cat had cat flu as a kitten (prior to us rescuing him), which meant his growth was stunted a little so he looked small compared to other Tom cats and he constantly had a runny nose and was wheezy at times.

OneFlewOverTheMumsNest · 04/07/2019 15:21

To add, we got treatment whenever he needed it in addition to regular health checks, we knew rescuing him would require this. However no matter what we did, his nose ran constantly and he sneezed all the time.

Bookworm4 · 04/07/2019 16:52

Well done, are vets notifying owners?

Bach45691 · 04/07/2019 16:56

They didn’t say but I think they’ll have to to make sure they know what treatment he’s had. Bit sad really, they said as long as a cats got food and shelter there’s not much else the rspca can do.

I would contact Cats Protection; they’re great and more pro active than Rspca
