Any doctor out there please?

Posting here for traffic. I had a baby 3 and a half weeks ago if that makes any difference.
Was feeling fine up until 5 pm yesterday when I suddenly vomited and had a horrible pain in my stomach. The pain eased slightly as the vomiting continued but it never left. It woke me several times during the night and I still have it now - it's in my right side and it hurts to cough or touch it.
My DP is here to mind baby but I'm terrified it's serious and I need to see a doctor .. I'm in Ireland and worried about having to wait around as I ache from vomitting. Any advice?

Did you have a c-section?

Appendicitis maybe a possibility? If you suspect it could be get yourself medical advice asap.

MunchMunch · 30/06/2019 10:10

Sorry meant to say I'm not a dr.

ineedagirlsname · 30/06/2019 10:12

Thank you. No no c section and a good recovery from the birth
Really don't want it to be appendicitis.. is that a big operation?
Don't want to google ad I'm scared enough

Which area of the abdomen is painful?

MunchMunch · 30/06/2019 10:37

It's usually keyhole surgery unless they've burst or any other complication. I'm not sure if it's classed as a big operation with keyhole but obviously having any kind of surgery and a new born isn't ideal.

Congratulations on your lovely baby Smile

ineedagirlsname · 30/06/2019 10:39

@ineedaknittedhat it's lower right side..
@MunchMunch thank you- I know re any potential surgery and tiny baby - awful timing - so hopefully it's nothing serious

My first thoughts would be either refined products from the birth or appendix..either way yes, you need to be seen. Hope it’s easily sorted.

noimaginationnamechange · 30/06/2019 11:09

Hey op, I'm a dr, what you describe could be appendicitis (although it could also be a lot of other things, but appendicitis needs to be ruled out). If you are still sore to touch on the right side, you need to be seen, and as soon as possible if you're feeling unwell/feverish. Go to your local hospital's emergency department. Depending on the problem, yes it's possible you might need surgery, but it might also be a matter of just some antibiotics to settle it in the first instance.

If you go to your local hospital's emergency department, describe your symptoms and explain that you're breastfeeding a newborn and worried it might be appendicitis, you'll get seen by a surgeon as soon as they are available. It's Sunday, if you go now, you might be seen sooner than if you go later in the day (depends a bit on where you are in Ireland) ;) ...If you do need surgery, it's a doddle compared to having a baby (and the sleep with the general anaesthetic can be a pleasant bonus).

Take your DP and baby with you if you're breastfeeding - then you can feed baby as needed so your milk supply doesn't get interrupted. The baby will be absolutely fine - I don't mean to be patronising - I just see this often and it's totally natural for mums to worry about their babies when going into hospital, but the babies, even that tiny, are really not bothered as long as there is food and someone to cuddle them! Grab some overnight things with you in case you need to stay.

ShowOfHands · 30/06/2019 11:14

You need to see a medical professional asap.

I had identical symptoms recently and they suspected appendicitis originally but it was something else entirely. Easily and quickly treated but wouldn't have been if I'd left it.

NotSoThinLizzy · 30/06/2019 11:25

Could it be kidney stones? I've had them and they are awful

ineedagirlsname · 30/06/2019 13:42

I took two paracetamol and slept.. pain isn't as bad but certainly not worse..
thank you one and all for the extremely helpful suggestions - if I can stay like this I'll go to my own gp tomorrow

NotSoThinLizzy · 02/07/2019 15:13

Did you find out what is was?

ineedagirlsname · 02/07/2019 15:45

I went to my gp yesterday and he diagnosed a bowel infection.
I'm on various tabs and I'm feeling better today.
Thank you for asking Thanks

Ah glad your feeling better. Hope you make a full recovery soon

ineedagirlsname · 07/07/2019 10:46

Just thought I'd update this thread...
The pain hadn't improved so I went back to my doctor Wednesday and he said he couldn't rule out appendicitis so he sent me to A and E. I had my appendix out at 2.30 am Friday morning. It was perforated and I'm lucky it didn't burst.. I'm so sore now on my right side as a result of the appendix being in such bad condition.
I just wanted to let others know not to leave it as late as I did to get a pain in your right hand side seen to!

Glad everything turned out well. Thanks for updating.

Crikey. Hope you’re better soon, OP!

stillmoving · 07/07/2019 12:41

I don't really think you left it a long time tbh. You felt unwell at tea time on June 29th and saw the GP 2 days later, Monday 1st July. That's not unrealistic to give it a chance to improve itself. I'm not a GP so no experience of diagnosing appendicitis; but the delay was really caused by the GP not you.

I hope you are feeling better real soon, it can't have been easy with a newborn Thanks

ineedagirlsname · 07/07/2019 13:11

Thank you both.
I'm still in hospital hoping that the pain in my right hand side goes away as it's very very sore.
I suppose I was in denial really that there was anything wrong because of my new baby- I just didn't want to leave her .. I was determined to "push past" the pain.. yeah right! Smile

AngelaScandal · 07/07/2019 13:42

You poor thing. Hopefully the medics are being generous with the pain relief.

ineedagirlsname · 07/07/2019 14:54

@angela yes they are I have to say - very generous

I had my appendix out a few years ago. It had also started to burst - less than 24 hours after starting to feel unwell!
I'm assuming they had to make an incision rather than keyhole surgery as it was already perforating. For the first few days I felt really rough. Don't expect to do anything other than lie in bed and cuddle your baby.
Once I started to feel better the recovery was quite quick but it was still about 3 weeks to feel strong again. You are also still in post birth recovery so you really do need to take it easy.
Are you on strong antibiotics? The nurse I saw said the antibiotics were ones that would make me feel pretty rough and recommended probiotic yogurts.
I hope you feel better soon.

ineedagirlsname · 07/07/2019 16:40

@Lindy2 I like the sound of the cuddles in bed with baby! I feel better today but apparently I have a slight infection according to the blood test results.
If it clears up and pain eases some more then I should be home tomorrow.. cross everything Smile
