We're moving to London from the North - DH has been given a relocation package of £5k (which is a new thing to us) and new employer is being fairly vague about what it covers, just saying "any costs associated with the move to London". We are to pay the upfront costs and expense the company once he starts.

He's done a LOT of negotiation on the offer / employment package / start date so would prefer not to come across as too cheeky by asking for things that wouldn't normally be covered by this.

For context, we own our current home and will be renting in London initially. We know that costs of movers and storage are covered, which is great. Can anyone help me out with what other things would usually be covered? Overnight accommodation in London for us when we go down to view property? Transport costs to get to London to view properties? Transport costs when we actually make The Move? Costs associated with getting our current house ready to rent out? Buying white goods if not provided in rental accommodation? Fees / deposit for rental property in London? Anything else? Would any of these be outrageous to ask for?

Not at all intending to come across as CFs...this feels like a complete luxury to us and we really don't want to take the piss.

HMRC actually provide guidance on what can be considered for relocation costs. Most of what you've stated would be covered under these rules, so I don't think you're being in the slightest bit a CF by asking for them

Thanks @Madvixen - we did have a look at that but found it hard to interpret tbh. It's helpful to hear your perspective.

@Youyoustole

Your DH needs his employer to be crystal clear with him what that £5K is for. Don't allow them to be vague and obfuscatory about it.

There's no point you and he committing to uproot your whole lives to come from a much cheaper area to an astronomically expensive area like London and only then realise you're breaking your family budget. £5K is an insult quite frankly.

If his employer is anyway professional they should have a relocation policy which clearly answers the question about what the money should cover.

Nobody on here can give you the answers, we'd be guessing like you're having to.

Don't allow them to be CFs!!
