DH has a broken foot - how do I make the next six weeks easier for everybody?

Looking for tips and tricks to help DH (and me!) over the next six to eight weeks whilst he's recovering. He has a pot to his knee, a lot of extra weight to carry and I work full time with a five year old.

I've bought a Limbo shower cast cover, he's fortunately able to avoid stairs and the house isn't too hot. He can work from home and my mom can come in a few weeks.

Today is my only chance to get out and throw a little bit of cash at the problem. I'm thinking picnic type food (he can't really cook or prepare food right now because he's still getting the hang of the crutches), shorts that will go over the pot, a big water bottle (I've lost count of the tones I've refilled for him in the last day) and a plastic bar stool for in the shower.

What else can I do / buy to help?

TIA

Does he like reading magazines ? Readily is really good. Every magazine you can think off for about £10 a month. You can have five ? Different users .

My dp was recently on crutches and I left a picnic in a bag on a morning in the fridge so he could hook it over his crutches at lunch time. Snacks and tablets on a table next to him. Bottles of water in the fridge as he won't be able to carry drinks without spilling also those thermos cups with lids for hot drinks for same reason. If I think of anything else I will add it x

I borrowed a ‘perching stool’ and thrutched around the kitchen on that. Knee crutches were unknown to me 12 years ago.

I couldn’t do stairs. No way could I hop up.

speaking from experience - crutches on stairs are possible but hard work and very tiring, best avoided (so you keep the bed).

Does the plastic bar stool have a back? It's easier if you can sit supported, otherwise he may overbalance.

He'll go stir crazy unless you get him out, the Red Cross and others do wheelchair hire and some attractions have electric chairs you can book.

If planning to fly anywhere on holiday check he is still Ok to fly and book assistance at the airport. That will most likely involve him being driven but you meeting up with him somewhere like left luggage. Push him yourself if you can, you wait around a lot for staff.

I bum shuffled up and down the stairs. Had two pairs of crutches, one upstairs and one downstairs so didn't have to transport them up and down.

Get a non slip shower mat. Crutches and slippy wet floors aren't a good combo.
