Bird mites! What the actual hell?

NC because this is gross and horrible and I want to cry.

We live in a new build with really cute dormer style windows in the bedrooms. Lovely, except sparrows decided to nest there. Fine enough, we got used to the noise and the 5am wake ups and the sound of tap dancing in hobnailed boots on our bedroom ceiling. What we weren't prepared for were the bird mites. Found a few while the birds were still nesting, but now the nest is empty and the mites are hungry and have invaded our bedroom. DH and I have been eaten alive.

What the hell do I do? We honestly cannot afford to call out a pest control company for 3 or 4 treatments, and I'm not even sure there's one specialising in bird mites near us. I've been changing the bedding daily, washing it at 90 and tumble drying it. I steamed curtains, windowsills and carpets, but it's not working.

Has anyone else had them and got rid successfully?

Please don't be judgy, my house is seriously clean and tidy, I have to keep on top of cleaning and dusting because I have so many allergies, but the little bastards just won't fuck off.

Is this not something your house insurance might cover??

Try a pet flea spray like Indorex, it tends to kill any insect and will last 6 months. Ventilate the room once used and do not inhale it.

Read the instructions carefully.

You need to get rid of the nests and block up where they are getting in.
Try applying a high DEET content insect repellent it might discourage them from biting you.
We got them once when I was a teenager, except I’m very allergic to the bites and ended up in hospital Shock

Diatomaceous earth works wonders

Mitebiteatnite · 30/06/2019 09:02

Nope, not covered by our home insurance.
I've contacted a local company to get a quote for removing the nest but I think DH is going to have to do it.

I am so itchy this morning, I want to cry. Blooding starlings have ruined every lie in for months now.

Oh no :(
I had bird mites earlier this year! What a pain in the arse, they was coming from an abandoned starling nest under the fascia on my roof.
Dp removed the nest, sprayed rentokil spray in there and blocked it off.
we filled any tiny gaps with filler, sprayed rentokil everywhere and steamed all the carpets which eventually killed them all but left my bedroom a right mess so we had to redecorate the entire room.
I don't like the fact we had to use the rentokil spray as them kind of things just aren't my cup of tea but it's the only way we could get them to go, we ended up having to sleep downstairs for about 5 nights as we had a 6month old at the time.
It was a nightmare but it is possible to get rid of them without professional help. Haven't had any since.
Goodluck getting them to go!

That's really helpful Tiger thanks!
I don't think they've made their way across to the kids room yet but I'm sure it won't be long. There's room for us to sleep downstairs but not both kids as well!
