How do I casually mention to boss I'd like more hours?

I have a friendly relationship with my boss, there's a line of professionalism but we chat on fb, follow each other on Instagram (she sent me the requests first) and get on really well. She just texted me to say colleague is leaving and how stressed she is (I'm on mat leave but return in three weeks). My job is part time, we needed someone in addition to me and colleague and now it's down to no-one until I'm back. I asked her what she's thinking and she said she'll hire someone else. As we needed someone else anyway (we need one full timer, two part timers and right now we only have me, a part timer), is there a way I could casually mention I'd like to become full-time? It'd be a little more responsibility but very similar to what I'm already doing.

Just tell her that you would be interested in more hours and responsibility.

She can’t read your mind and probably doesn’t want to put pressure on you as you return from maternity leave,

FogCutter · 29/06/2019 18:59

Just tell her that you would be interested in working more hours. It's far easier and less risky to up the hours of an existing (good!) staff member then to recruit others- better the devil you know and all thatSmile

Sticksand · 29/06/2019 19:17

@FogCutter quite tempted to add that onto the message Grin

She will bite your hand off I bet!

CalamityJune · 29/06/2019 19:19

I agree, i think she would be really pleased

SausageSimon · 29/06/2019 19:23

Just ask whether she'd consider you for the full time role, I'm sure she will be very pleased Smile

Sticksand · 29/06/2019 19:43

I just can't find the right wording 😤

Do it, I've just volunteered to up mine to cover another part-timer's mat leave and my boss was very pleased to oblige.

SausageSimon · 29/06/2019 19:54

I'd just put "Hi Boss, I was wondering whether you'd consider me for the full time role as I could use some extra hours?" Straight to the point

GoadyMcGoad · 29/06/2019 19:56

There is no reason to be casual in these situations. You need the money, she needs someone to fit the bill.

Send an email or see her in person, be professional and ask to be considered for full time.

Good luck Flowers You will be fine.

Hi Boss
Thinking about my return to work and am very keen to take on more responsibility and in turn more hours. In light of X's departure I thought this might be something that you could consider. Would you have some free time to discuss next week?

Yabbers · 29/06/2019 20:07

I just can't find the right wording

“I’d like to go full time”

How hard can it be?

XXVaginaAndAUterus · 29/06/2019 20:10

"I'm stressed that we have just lost Amanda and now I need another member of staff"

"Maybe I can help a little! I'd love to go full time when I come back, would you consider me for the full time vacancy?"

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 29/06/2019 20:11

You don’t be casual for starters. You just say “is there any chance of me having more hours? I’m fucking skint“. Grin

Sticksand · 29/06/2019 20:24

She said yes Grin

Fantastic. Well done.

XXVaginaAndAUterus · 29/06/2019 21:13

Yaayyy!! Go you!

Now see if there's any improvement on the salary available too :)

Sticksand · 29/06/2019 21:24

Thank you
@XXVaginaAndAUterus pushing it a bit?Grin

You just say that you’d be more than happy to go fu-time if needed. She’ll probably bite your hand off!

underneaththeash · 29/06/2019 22:18

Fab....well done OP
