Please recommend me a red wine

I want to buy a thank you present for someone I don't know particularly well. I'm told she likes a good quality red wine, so wondered if anyone could recommend one, ideally that I can buy from Tescos. Not sure how much you have to pay for a good quality one, but obviously not something thats £5-7.

Chateauneuf du pape.

AlpenCrazy · 29/06/2019 08:19

Barolo or a very good Rioja

theneverendinglaundry · 29/06/2019 08:26

I second a very good rioja.

Hi OP there is a lady called the Knackered Mother who reviews wine (I think she is a professional wine critic). On her website you can put a supermarket, wine colour and price range and her recommendations come up. I always use her when wanting to buy some decent supermarket wine.

Andromeida59 · 29/06/2019 08:30

I'd go for Campo Viejo. One of my favourite reds in that price range.

ImpracticalCape · 29/06/2019 08:31

Unless you have £50 to spend a Chatreauneuf de Pape will be horrible and she will know it.

Go for a Bordeaux, if it says Premier Cru then all the better.

Tesco website has a Margaux a Barolo and a St Emilion any of those should do the trick.

ImpracticalCape · 29/06/2019 08:31

Sorry. All for around £20

Derpess · 29/06/2019 08:31

Dark horse Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the nicest wines I have tried. Sainsbury's have it for £8.50.

FrenchBoule · 29/06/2019 08:33

Go to asda website, look at the reviews and prize winning wines. I would recommend australian shiraz for red and italian pinot grigio

anyoneneedabodygaurd · 29/06/2019 08:35

Chocolate block, my favourite red wine but I don't drink very often as is about £17-£20 a bottle

ImpracticalCape · 29/06/2019 08:36

Oh dear god. Don't for a branded wine like Campo Veijo

Bunnyhop1502 · 29/06/2019 08:40

Yellow Tail Jammy Red Roo. £7 in Tesco. It’s delightful!

ImpracticalCape · 29/06/2019 08:42

OP wine is REALLY hard to get right. I'd honestly suggest anything else as it's so dividing! One persons delight is another persons horror.

Can you go for some nice chocs or something? I bought a friend a succulent vase as a thank you and she was delighted. Pic attached.

Please recommend me a red wine
Bunnyhop1502 · 29/06/2019 08:42

Posted too soon! Also try Aldi and Lidl. Cheap doesn’t mean poor quality!

Lightsabre · 29/06/2019 08:47

For that price, Italian reds are nice - maybe a Primitivo or Montepulciano. Or stretch to a lovely Barolo.

ImpracticalCape · 29/06/2019 08:47

See. If anyone even pitched up at a dinner party bearing Yellow Tail wine I'd be horrified never mind giving it as a gift. It's cheap and badly made and the growers get bugger all.

Before everyone does the usual 'wine snob' bullshit, yes I'd drink it but I wouldn't enjoy it. The OP however has asked for a gift for someone who likes high quality wine. Yelllowtail and Campo Viejo isn't going to cut it sorry.

Bunnyhop1502 · 29/06/2019 08:50

It’s not bullshit if it’s true! You are a wine snob. Own it Wink

ifonly4 · 29/06/2019 10:18

Thanks for your replies. I'm going down to Tescos later armed with a list of suggestions. It's 25% off if you buy six bottles, so that'll help with the price. Just means I'll have to buy an extra six bottles of something, what shall I do with them?!!

MustardScreams · 29/06/2019 10:19

Drink them!

A really good Pinot noir is a good bet, and lovely in this weather as it’s that much lighter.

ifonly4 · 29/06/2019 10:37

Mustard that's exactly the answer I wantedGrin

I'd go to aldi or Lidl and spend £20 on a bottle there, we've had some very nice wines from there.

There's an app you can download where you scan the barcode on the wine and it tells you about it, plus a 'rating' score from other drinkers who've had it. Might be a good idea if you really are clueless.

Wine is so personal. I love a good thick French red, whereas Dh prefers a lighter one. We both hate Pinot noir though. Would it be better to get your friend 2 really nice wine glasses that she'll definitely use rather than a bottle that she might not?

JaneJeffer · 29/06/2019 12:11

La Brunaude Syrah is lovely.

SrSteveOskowski · 29/06/2019 14:36

I like this (pic hopefully attached) I'm in Ireland so ignore the euro prices.
Have a look at wine app vivino.

Please recommend me a red wine

Chateauneuf du pape or a posh Malbec.

Grandpag · 29/06/2019 19:05

Go to Magestic. They will give you good advice.
