Today i have my first ever prescription for roaccutane. I have just taken two tablets (40mg).

Dertmatologist said today that he expects treatment to be around 10 months.

Im armed with lip balm, body shops vitamin E face gel moisturiser. Im really really excited to finally have normal skin

Just wanted to share my exciting news

Dd1 took it for 6 months and it was miraculous. Sadly after a year most of her acne came back, she then went on the pill yasmin which cleared it completely.

flamingo40 · 27/06/2019 16:20

I've had this twice.
Be prepared for your mood to become low.
It's absolutely normal,
My side effects were mainly dry skin but it honestly worked wonders.
Good luck

MojitoMojitoo · 27/06/2019 16:21

Ive been on it twice, get eye drops too!

Both DSs been on it. Ds1 currently on his 2nd round. DS2 still gets spots but just normal teenage skin rather than acne again I think. He is waiting list for laser treatment for his face but his back is scarred even worse :(. Good luck with it OP. Apart from the dryness and nosebleeds, they were relatively side effect free.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 27/06/2019 16:25

Very exciting!!! Remember sunscreen as well, your skin will get very sensitive to the sun. I took roaccutane when I was a teenager and got very burnt, my face is still damaged from it, but my acne is gone!

bellajay · 27/06/2019 16:26

I was on it for 7 months, my skin has been fantastic for the three years since. I didn’t find the dryness too bad, my joints got quite sore though. As a pp said low mood can be normal but do keep talking about it if you feel that way. The best thing about it was my hair - I went from having to wash it daily to absolutely no oily hair ever, it was amazing!

Think I saw results after about three months, when they upped my dosage. It changed my life, to be honest!

CitadelsofScience · 27/06/2019 16:29

It's brilliant stuff and I'd take it again if needed too.

Stock up on pain killers, my joints were very sore too.

Good luck on your journey.

Mrspimplepopper · 27/06/2019 16:31

Thanks for the heads up about sunscreen

Ive been 10 years with bad skin, wash my hair every single day its so oily..im so very excited. Atm im feeling really positive.

Really pleased for you op. Grin

Mrspimplepopper · 27/06/2019 16:33

LashesZ · 27/06/2019 16:35

How exciting. I had one course of it and it has sorted me out since, 11 years later. It is a miracle drug. I didn't experience low mood. My scars have faded massively because there was no active breakouts to keep scarring. I hope it goes well for you Smile

avalanching · 27/06/2019 16:37

That seems a long period of time for 40mg! Hope you get on ok, it is miracle stuff if you ask me, it gets a bad wrap but 3 years on I am spot free after years of hell :) dry skin, painful joints and sensitivity to sun were my main issues but they went away soon after finishing.

MojitoMojitoo · 27/06/2019 16:40

Any just for dry eyes mine were so bad definitely wouldn't have been able to wear my contacts back then!

Really hope it all works out for you xx

avalanching · 27/06/2019 16:45

I had no issues with dry eyes and wore contacts no problem, may be worth just seeing how you get on.

bellajay · 27/06/2019 17:00

My scars have also faded loads, but also I barely notice them because I’m so happy to be spot free!

Mrspimplepopper · 27/06/2019 17:05

My face today. It makes me so sad, which i know is daft seen as people have much worse

Definitely take progress pics each month, I wish I had ☺️ There are some great youtubers blogging their roaccutane journeys if you want to see more of what might lie ahead.

lurkingfromhome · 27/06/2019 17:47

I was on it for 6 months and it was life-changing. I took weekly progress pics and went from having a face literally covered in hideous infected spots (I counted 32 spots on my chin area alone) to entirely clear skin and have not had a single spot since.

Very few side-effects and no mood changes (other than going from depressed as hell about having adult acne to being ecstatic at having lovely skin).

CitadelsofScience · 27/06/2019 17:53

Yes I wish I'd taken progress pictures but my mood was so low because my face was so painful and people stared at me.

It was the nurses at the hospital or taking bloods that really let me know how well it was working. That helped enormously. I'm now 2 1/2 years on and my skin is so clear, hence me wishing I'd taken pics to look back on to see how bad it was at its worst.

Babyroobs · 27/06/2019 17:58

My son took this and it was very effective but he was on it for some time.

Chewbecca · 27/06/2019 17:58

DS started it last week. Only 20mg a day though, may be upped at his 6 week check. He's very optimistic about being on it. He's had a slightly dry mouth/throat this week but nothing major and no visible change in the spots yet. Refused to take pics for progress! He is using cetaphil moisturizer with SPF 50 every morning & using vaseline on his lips.
All the best, hope it works for you with minimal side effects.

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/06/2019 20:02

DS1 was on 70mg both times. 6 months first go and he's 5 months in on probably 6 months again. DS2 was on 90mg for 6 months but he was heavier. Both have some bad scarring but ds2s is considerably worse. He's just been diagnosed dyspraxic and apparently this can affect the collagen in the skin making it more prone to scarring.

MidsomerBurgers · 27/06/2019 20:05

SUNSCREEN!!!!

Also consider some lube and eyedrops, it dries up EVERYTHING.

I had it 15 years ago, and whilst it wasn't pleasant for me it had a fantastic outcome that was more than worth it.

NewMe2019 · 27/06/2019 22:26

I'm awaiting a dermatology appointment with a view to going on this. I'm sick to death of my skin, even though it doesn't seem that bad and is only ony my chin and around my nose, but I'm heading for 40 and I just want clear skin and to be able to feel condident about going out without makeup on (I will quickly do the school run bare faced but that's it, and not when skin is really flaring up).

A massive concern for me though is that I'll have to stop getting waxed and using hair removal cream and my phillips lumia. I'm really hairy and these keep it all at bay.

NewMe2019 · 27/06/2019 22:27

Oh, and does not everyone get the low mood then? This is something that concerns me having battled depression many times and I'm in a good place right now.
