Can anyone identify this painting for me?

I saw a print of it in someone's house many years ago and only remembered it recently but I can't identify it.

The original is, I believe, oil. From memory, it has a dark and 'stormy' background and a naked, pale skinned woman with long, dark, wavy (?) hair having emerged from the sea/lake/body of water. Her look is quite intense - sultry maybe. Her head is slightly bowed down and her eyes are looking up towards the viewer.

Any ideas?

I have the name Salome in my head - I seem to associate it with the painting.

Google hasn't been able to help. Can MN?

Thanks

There's an almost 'witch' quality to her

Ok that would fit with Circe. Maybe Calypso?

TheBossOfMe · 27/06/2019 14:43

For the life of me cannot think of a painting of either of them that matches your description though!

Wouldn't have misheard, I think I saw it signed on the painting but happy to think I've misremembered that.

Enchantress, yes, rather than 'witch'.

But none of the paintings showing when I searched for Circe.

That sounds like Circe. John William Waterhouse is my bet - maybe mermaid? Or perhaps one of his studies for a painting?

Chunkers · 27/06/2019 14:44

I’m too invested now...

TheBossOfMe · 27/06/2019 14:46

If it was definitely Salome, then I'm stumped. Lovely dark picture of Salome - but doesn't match your description:

Apolloanddaphne · 27/06/2019 14:47

There is this Waterhouse one but she isn't walking.

CandlesOnTheHearth · 27/06/2019 14:48

You know, Chunkers that could be it!
Maybe I've just undressed her over the years!! Grin

The face would fit...

I'm sure she was naked though! But it is stormy and dark...

Is it Sapho? I love this painting it's in the Manchester gallery...

If it was definitely Salome

no, not definitely. And alcohol was involved. And we are going back 15+ years! Grin

I was going to suggest the same as Chunkers. It's Sappho. The original is (or was, maybe not now) in the Manchester Art Gallery and is huge and really striking. I had the print in my house for many years. Maybe we know each other Wink

CandlesOnTheHearth · 27/06/2019 14:51

That's what Chunkers suggested, Just!

I think it might be!!

I need that in my life.

I knew MN would be able to solve it! Grin

A different J H Lynch one, perhaps? Nymph ...

CandlesOnTheHearth · 27/06/2019 14:53

Maybe, Never... Grin

I remembered the 'Sa...' part then!!

OP posts:
OutwiththeOutCrowd · 27/06/2019 14:53

Okay, probably not then! Smile

TheBossOfMe · 27/06/2019 14:54

If it's Sappho, you have very good taste, it's a really beautiful painting!

Al203 · 27/06/2019 14:54

It is a stunning picture. Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema did some pictures of Sappho too, but I suspect not as dark.

NeverPromisedYouARoseGarden · 27/06/2019 14:57

Well, if alcohol was involved we definitely do! Grin

Have you looked at tarot decks? Some of those are very artistic and so many different ones. The Star often features a woman and water and depending on the style of the deck they can be very intriguing.

itshappened · 27/06/2019 15:08

Lady of shallots?

itshappened · 27/06/2019 15:08

Sorry that was meant to say shallott!

Apolloanddaphne · 27/06/2019 15:15

Of course. It's Sappho. I am cross I didn't think of that! GrinGreat painting.
