What age were your DC when they are from dinner plates?

Rather than kid-sized dinner plates or side plates?

I think DD was 2ish. She basically decided on her own that the smaller plate was not good anymore when we had larger ones which looked different.

clippityclop · 27/06/2019 13:15

When they moved from high chair to sit on booster at the dinner table. Probably about 18 months/2.

My DC aged 4 and 9 use small plates still - china not plastic, bigger than a side plate but smaller than a full sized plate. They are nowhere near ready for the massive ones we have!!

PetrichorRain · 27/06/2019 13:25

DS is 4.5 and still has a small plate, one of our china side plates.

greensnail · 27/06/2019 13:25

My dc are 9 and 10, they probably use a normal sized plate about half of the time now but are still happy with a side plate the rest of the time.

Bookworm4 · 27/06/2019 13:28

Is plate size relevant?
they are no way ready for the size we use
Ready? For what? A big plate doesn’t mean a bigger portion. 🙄🙄

Stravapalava · 27/06/2019 13:42

Yes I know that but it would just look very lost. Horses for courses. No need to eyeroll.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 27/06/2019 13:46

I think with a first or only child it can tend to be later, whereas subsequent children probably want what the older ones have. Plus my ds2 has always had a big appetite! I think at one point I might have compromised with picnic plates, so full size but not breakable.

They always did. You can put a small portion on a big plate!

reluctantbrit · 27/06/2019 15:48

I think we chose smaller plates as we didn't care that much if these ones would break :-) We also cooled them in the fridge before filling so the food wouldn't be so hot, DD hated hot, straight-from-the-pot- food for a long time and otherwise we would have finished before she had started. These ones are actually made from glass but look like shiny stoneware so it worked better.

They had the bunnykins china plates and mugs, from about two until about 6, then got adult china plates

Gottoloveabagel · 27/06/2019 17:44

We had some medium sized plates we bought from ikea, I know you can put small portions on big plates but people invariably don't! Mine are 10 and 13 and now switch between the 2 sizes depending upon the meal.

I'm often amazed at how much some children are expected to eat! Lots of my daughter's friends are on the chunky side but have eaten adult portions for years and not been taught to stop when full, we would rather they have a smaller portion and go back for more. This said they now probably eat a bigger sized portion of pasta than me these days!!
