How do I cancel/swap my broadband?

I'm not the most organised person firstly - we moved into this flat 5 years ago and I just went with the first broadband company that called me and offered broadband. It has been on constant renewal ever since. No letters through the post or anything, just constantly renewed automatically. As I say I have no letters indicating who my broadband company is even. I have noticed the package has ballooned to 28 pcm for a basic package. I've seen a cheaper deal for 18 pcm. I tracked the company who takes direct debit out of my account. Their website says they only supply commercial premises, which is strange as our house is very much a residential premises when I last checked...anyway I emailed then a week ago. No acknowledgement or response from them since. Now, can I just go ahead and switch to a new supplier without informing the current provider? Oh, and I need the telephone number for our connection (which I don't have a clue what that is as I only use my mobile - don't even have a landline phone). How can I track my phone number?

I recently switched to a fibre broadband contract with a different company. I did everything online. I found the deal and company I wanted, & I found and completed a cancellation form for my now old supplier and emailed it to them giving them the notice required. There was no gap in service & I cancelled the old supplier direct debit with my bank. Perhaps call your mobile, or call a family/friends landline, from your landline to find out your phone number

Yes you can still switch. Sign up for a new supplier and they will arrange the handover from your old one.

You don't usually need the phone number unless you want to keep it (given you don't use it that seems unlikely). But otherwise it shouldn't be too hard to borrow a landline phone, plug it in and call your mobile from it. That will show your number.

Yeah I don't even have a landline handset but I might be able to borrow one from work, good idea. OK so the new provider will take care of informing the old provider. Ideal.
