Why do you ask? They will start learning to spell simple CVC (Consonant-vowel-consonant) words plus some 'tricky' words (common words with irregular spelling or phonemes they haven't learnt yet like 'the') as part of their Phonics. When they do this will depend on how they are progressing with the Phonics rather than age but I would expect them to be doing this before this time of year.

Ignore that - either I completely misread the thread title or you have changed it. I answered a different question although it partly fits.

Look, cover, say.
Worked with my two.

Is this to do at home in addition to school? Honestly I was really annoyed when my daughter’s school said they though she needed extra help with spellings. She had just turned 5 and I asked other than her name what exactly do you expect her to spell?
She’s 14 now writes prolifically and creatively but is still a lousy speller despite all the ‘extra help’.

No this is school homework

I'd agree with Look, Cover, Write, Check.

Why on earth would 4 year olds need to spell?

Why on earth would 4 year olds need to spell?

Um, isn't that what they do at school? My 4 year old can spell lots of words since starting school and shes by no means advanced in her class.

KindergartenKop · 26/06/2019 20:09

I think really they need to learn how to read sounds and predict how words are spelt using their knowledge of sounds before learning the rule of how things are spelt. At my DS's school they would rather they try to write 'the dog waz bloo' and have a go at the sentence than avoid writing anything because they can't spell it. I would be concerned about a school that's pushing spelling so early on unless your child is super advanced at phonics already.

IamChipmunk · 26/06/2019 21:25

As a pp said they are encouraged to write and spell phonetically at this age...
Ds' reception teacher said to just encourage him to sound words out and not worry if he came up with a phonetic spelling. The reading, writing and shaping a story are more important...

newmumwithquestions · 26/06/2019 21:30

At 4 they should be outside making mud pies and not worrying about spelling.

That’s the attitude I’m taking anyway. Unless they really want to learn to spell at that age in which case crack on but surely school days are long enough for a 4/5 year old without adding structured learning at home (obviously some learning will happen all the time including through play, that’s different).

Itstheprinciple · 27/06/2019 20:01

As above, they should really just be learning to use their phonic knowledge in Reception and not worrying too much about the correct spelling so, for example, you might get 'rainboa' instead of rainbow because they've learned the 'oa' digraph but don't yet realise that 'ow' can be like cow or low.

Lardlizard · 28/06/2019 12:49

I agree, I think it’s very strange to try and get Reception children
And I hope this doesn’t hold then back in some way, like stifle their writing because they are too concern with spelling things correctly
